A new Toyota 4Runner finally showed up, even though it didn’t look likely at first. The sixth-generation 4Runner is here to stay. It has a 2.4-liter turbo-four engine, hybrid technology that can be added, more trims than ever before (including a new off-road model called Trailhunter), and many new looks that will keep things interesting for years to come. The old 4Runner, with its base and five-speed automatic transmission, is no longer made.

This new ‘Yota is different from the one that came before it. There are many bends and curves on it, especially in the front, where the fascia is tight and high. It looks like it’s its own thing. The 4Runner and Tacoma look a lot alike, even though some of their features are different. It’s more of an evolution of Toyota’s design style for all of its trucks and SUVs, especially the body-on-frame cars that are built on the same TNGA-F platform. The Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, Land Cruiser, and, most recently, the 4Runner are some of them.

Finally, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, an SUV based on the Tacoma and turbocharged, is here

The Toyota design team made a few references to older models. What would an off-road car be like today without them? The drop-down back window is back, as expected. Let’s take a look at the rear quarter glass, though. It’s a nod to the original 4Runners, whose tops could be taken off by wrapping around them a little. But I’m getting off track. It’s too bad that a new Toyota can’t have it.

Looking at What’s Under the 4 Runnin’ Hood

Now that we’ve properly looked at the 4Runner’s looks let’s talk about its engine. The SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited all have a base 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine that makes 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The 4.0-liter V6 engine in the old 4Runner had more power, with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. That’s also a lot better than the 4Runner’s last four-cylinder engine, the 22RE, which was mean but impossible to kill. An electric motor and a 1.87 kWh battery work together to make 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. All trim levels above TRD Pro, the new Trailhunter, and Platinum come with the hybrid drivetrain as standard. TRD Off-Road and Limited cars can also get it.

There is only an eight-speed automatic gear, no matter what kind of engine is used. Pour us a drink for our long-awaited guidebook. If enough people are angry, Toyota might finally punish the 4Runner, just like it did with the Supra.

Different models of the 4Runner will come with two-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, or full-time four-wheel drive. In addition to the automatic limited-slip differential found in the 2WD models, the 4WD models have a transfer case with two speeds. Other Toyota models that have locking center differentials are the Platinum trim and full-time 4WD models with hybrid powertrains, like the Limited.

It can carry up to 6,000 pounds and comes with both gas-powered and electric powertrains. I need to find out how many people haul big things in their 4Runners.

More fun things to do

The new Trailhunter model has a smaller group of improvements. The first thing that goes into the truck is an automatic rear locker. It sports steel rock guards, skid plates, 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires, and Old Man Emu 2.5-inch shocks with rear external piggyback reservoirs. For those rare times when the truck’s engine and hybrid batteries get wet, it even comes with a snorkel. That’s what I’m telling you now.

It has 9.2 inches of ground clearance, which is more than any new Land Cruiser (which only has 8.0 inches). The Big Boy 4Runner has 32 degrees of approach and 24 degrees of exit, which are better off-road angles than the Land Cruiser’s 31 degrees and 17 degrees. Because of this, the brand’s new “Yota” is seen as the best of its large selection of four-wheel cars.

Toyota has taken good care of the 4Runner by giving it two high-end off-road trim levels. This method has already been used on the Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter, so it’s not a wonder that the adventure SUV keeps the dual halo ones. Toyota will say a lot more about the Trailhunter when it comes out, but it’s worth pointing out that the 4Runner TRD Pro doesn’t have the smart IsoDynamic seats with built-in air-over-oil shock dampers that are in the Tacoma TRD Pro.

Lastly, a new trim level called Platinum makes it clear that the 4Runner is not a special four-wheeler but a high-end car for most people. It’s not just about rock climbing and off-roading; it’s also about comfort and ease of living. It looks more sophisticated thanks to its gloss black body, heated second-row seats, and heads-up display. People will buy them because it looks like a Limited but is better.

Decor that is less understated and more modern

There will be 4Runners with eight-inch screens for entertainment, but the majority will probably have the 14-inch Mac Daddy panel. It works well in every way, and we’ve seen it in other new Toyota cars. Compared to older Toyota panels, this one is easy to use and of higher quality. Even though it’s annoying, a 360-degree camera feed will help you if you’re off-roading and hit something you can’t get around. It’s also fine if you only want to utilize Apple CarPlay.

In the same way, cheaper trim levels come with a seven-inch cluster of gauges, while sleeker models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument screen. In other words, a top-of-the-line 4Runner like the Platinum or TRD Pro gives the driver more than two feet of screen room. It looks like Toyota stayed in the analog era before making a quick left turn into the digital era because the dashboard is mostly made up of dials, knobs, and buttons. This is how the auto business lives now.

Still, a lot of important parts are managed separately. Take a look at the transfer case lever. It has a single flipper switch that lets you choose between 4HI, 4LO, and 2WD. A dial is placed so that it is easy for the driver to use. This dial controls other off-road features, like the much-improved Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select, which can now be used in both 4WD modes. You don’t have to scroll through the different touchscreen options to see the camera views when you press the button. Toyota has clearly thought about how this will affect the user.

Everyone should be happy that Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and all of its features are built in. Some features that come in handy for driving around town are full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing aid, and a pre-collision system that can identify pedestrians. A lot of this sounds like marketing speak, and in a way, it does, but it’s good that Toyota puts the best safety features on every 4Runner. Some SUVs may let you drive without using your hands, but this one does not. But what do you know? This works well. Everything is fine.

What’s Next?

As a general rule, these will be everywhere when they come out this fall. We are still determining how long this 4Runner will last. The first members of the departing group showed up when I was still in elementary school. The new model, on the other hand, is much better prepared for the future thanks to its small displacement, forced induction motor, and clear hybrid element.

Toyota won’t speed up the 4Runner’s electric conversion any time soon. The car company has built its name on hybrids, so it has yet to see electric cars as the way of the future. This picture of what we’re likely to get in the near future makes me happy.

No matter how many die-hard Toyota fans may be sad about this, the 4Runner is suddenly back in style. Choose an older model if you want something simple. This does look like a great platform for making a modern mobile adventure game.
