For the first time, Ford is bringing the Mustang to GT3 endurance races. The Mustang is one of the most famous sports cars of all time, so it may come as a surprise that it has never participated in endurance races. But that is about to change. Ford is starting a five-part video series on YouTube to follow the 2017 Ford Mustang GT3 as it gets ready for its first race at Daytona. The first part of the documentary was just revealed.

One of the best things about racing is how hard it is. During the race season, it might be hard for even the biggest and best-funded teams to keep their cars fixed and in good shape. Getting a car ready for its first season in a sport it has never done before is a whole different animal. But, as the video series says, “It’s not called endurance racing because it’s short and easy.”

The factory backs this Mustang GT3 under the Ford Performance name. However, Ford is also working with Multimatic Motorsports in North Carolina and M-Sport in England. This company is working with Ford to make a 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 GT3 engine based on the Coyote. The American V8 noise that it makes sounds amazing.

But things always go differently than planned. The program wants to show the good and bad parts of getting a race car ready for its first GT3 race. Drivers ask for changes to be made to the car so that it works perfectly, but parts break, and data gets mixed up. Due to this ongoing conflict, the car has been in development for almost two years, but testing at Sebring International Raceway has only just started.

Ford, on the other hand, is worried about more than just the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and the debut of the Mustang GT3. The Mustang GT3 must be a reliable race car that Ford’s teams can rely on since it will be sold to customer racing teams all over the world. It needs to be quick, too. The first of five parts in this series is now out. Over the next three weeks, the last four parts, which build up to Daytona, will be released.
