• A new report says that Ford will not deliver its three-row electric SUV until 2027 instead of 2025.
  • Ford has also decided to wait until 2026 to release its next electric truck. However, an electric commercial car should be out by the middle of this decade.
  • Ford said that by 2030, all of its models will have hybrid powertrains and a cheap building block for electric cars.

Ford is changing its plans for a lot of new electric cars. The company said today that it will be focusing on making a new three-row EV SUV instead of a cheaper small EV. Ford’s announcement shows that it is still committed to growing its hybrid product line. It also confirms recent rumors and gives a new release date for its next-generation electric truck and commercial car.

Ford Sets Back the Next-Gen Electric Truck until 2026 and the Next-Gen Three-Row EV SUV until 2027

The Oakville Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, will build Ford’s first three-row electric car. It was originally supposed to come out in 2025. The current plan is for this kind of car to come out in 2027. According to a news release, Ford talks a lot about “three-row electric vehicles.” It needs to be clarified how many types are meant by the plural form. Ford says this delay “will allow the consumer market for three-row EVs to develop further” and will let the company use better battery technologies. With Ford’s three-row EV, the Explorer name will likely be offered in the electric car market. The 2022 Star idea in this car makes it possible that it will be Lincoln’s first electric vehicle.

For another reason, Ford is delaying the release of its planned electric truck, which was supposed to happen in 2025. Ford says that sales of electric vehicles will start in 2026 and slowly grow “to help assure quality.” The Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center is being built on the company’s new BlueOval City site in Stanton, Tennessee. This is where the cars will be made. It’s unclear if this car will replace the F-150 Lightning or if it will fill a slightly different need.

There is a “skunkworks” team at Ford that is working on a “smaller, low-cost, profitable, flexible EV platform.” Former Tesla tech Alan Clarke leads the team. Ford didn’t say what kinds of cars it would work with, but it did say that it was being made for “multiple vehicles at high volumes.” A previous study looked at a new, low-cost electric car that could turn into a small pickup truck in the future.

Ford says that by the middle of this decade, there will be a new electric commercial car that will be better than the current E-Transit, which is based on the gas-powered van. The building is still being built at the Ohio Assembly Plant near Avon Lake, Ohio. In the spring of 2025, tools should start being put in place. This is where the EV will be made.

Ford says it will add more electric cars to its lineup. Ford says that hybrid powertrains will be offered across the entire lineup by 2030, but they don’t say which models. Ford has added hybrid trim options to the Escape, the F-150, and the Maverick.
