In Spanish, “lobo” means “wolf.” But for Ford, Lobo can also mean the F-150. Since at least 25 years ago, the full-size F-150 truck has been called “Lobo” in Mexico. Not “F-150 Lobo,” just “Lobo.” A few cars that are sold in certain areas have strange names. A new trademark entry found by Ford Authority shows that the Lobo name may be coming to the United States.

There is a file for both the F-150 and the Maverick. Ford has registered the names “F-150 Lobo” and “Maverick Lobo,” but not much else is known about the truck. Some people, including Ford Authority, think that “Lobo” will be a street-oriented speed version, like a crashed Raptor that has been fixed up for driving in the city. It might have been an F-150 Lightning in the past, but now it’s the EV version, which is already fast. There is no proof, but some things could be improved with reasoning.

Based on this reasoning, a Maverick Lobo with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine might be the best-performing small Ford. We thought a street truck like this would be a Maverick ST when the Maverick came out, but maybe “Lobo” will be to trucks what “SVT/ST” was to performance cars.

It also could be mostly nothing. Businesses use many different ways to protect their intellectual property. Even if Ford has no plans to make Lobos outside of Mexico, the “Lobo” trademarks may exist to stop a real, imagined, or made-up competitor from using the word without permission. We’ll let you know if the reports get more specific if scary spy photos come out, or if someone from Ford yells at us.
