A new group of Japanese cars can now be brought into the country in the new year. The R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R is one of the most interesting of these. The R34 GT-R is such a legendary car, but it’s so expensive and hard to find that you might as well look at it. Stay calm, though. The last generation Silvia, or S15, is a more approachable JDM Nissan that can now be brought into the country legally. The S15 was the best Nissan had to offer on its S-chassis, which is one of the most popular platforms for rear-wheel-drive sports cars ever. All kinds of motorsports fans liked these cars, like our 240SX, the original Silvia, and the 180SX. They were popular in drag racing, road racing, and drifting. Think of them as Toyota GR86s that could be bought with a turbo engine at the time. This showed up in the S15 as the 2.0-liter SR20DET four-cylinder engine, which also got a ball-bearing turbo that made it more agile. The engine was said to have 247 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. This power was sent to the rear axle through either a four-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. In addition to the naturally aspirated version with a six-speed manual transmission, there was also a version with five speeds. However, only some people will buy those after. Spec-R models with either HICAS four-wheel steering or a factory aero kit (called “Aero”) are the turbo cars you want. Because they were only used on a few cars, it will be hard and expensive to find one. This is because S15s are the most expensive generation of S-chassis cars. The GT-R Registry says that Nissan only made 43,147 of them before they stopped making them in August 2002. Of those, only 645 had the 4WS, but almost half of them were turbocharged. The law says that you can only bring in cars that are 25 years old to the month right now. That means you can’t just bring in any 1999 car. It’s important to act quickly if you want to get your hands on one of the good ones.
