• Mercedes-Benz is getting closer to releasing the much-anticipated electric G-class. This masked production version will be shown at the 2024 CES technology expo (formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Expo) in Las Vegas.
  • The EV G-wagen will come out at the end of 2024, but this is the best look we’ve had so far.
  • The Electric G doesn’t have an official name yet, but it will likely be called EQG in the future.

Mercedes-Benz teased us with this masked prototype on the CES show floor, even though the luxury electric SUV version of the G-Wagen is almost done being built. The off-road wonder has been getting an electric makeover for a few years now. It all started with the Concept EQG show car in 2021.

Future Mercedes-Benz EQG Shows Off Its Camouflage; Production Is Set to Start Soon

From how the prototype on display looks, it looks like the electric SUV is very close to the idea and can be easily recognized as a G-class. The squared-off cover of the concept car hides the extra tire that was put in the back. The flat hood and clean lines are a nod to the original Gelandewagen.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t shared any official specs yet, but the new SUV will have at least two electric motors for all-wheel drive that work all the time. Because the Concept EQG can do impressive tank turns and has an optional four-motor engine, we hope that a production version will have it. The new technology turns the SUV’s wheels on each side in the opposite direction, which lets the car turn all the way around.

Additionally, it needs to be clarified if the production model will be called the G-class instead of the more current EQG so that it fits in better with Mercedes-Benz’s other electric cars. This is written on the license plate of the prototype that was shown at CES.

It doesn’t matter what it’s called; Mercedes’ next electric off-road car will likely go on sale in 2025 after its public debut in 2024. As soon as the SUV is made public, we’ll learn more about its electric engine, battery size, and range. If you’re not ready for an electric car yet, you can still live out your off-road (or Beverly Hills homemaker) dreams with a V-8 engine. Along with the electric car, there will likely be a better version of the gas-powered car.
