• Honda has released a picture of the CR-V with a fuel cell that is hidden.
  • It looks like a normal CR-V, with only a few small changes to the front end.
  • There will be a whole new powertrain below that is built on hydrogen and electricity.

As we’ve already said, Honda is working on a small SUV called the CR-V that runs on hydrogen. There it is! The new CR-V fuel cell (FCEV) will be sold in the US later this year. Given the changes in front-end design, it’s not a surprise that it looks like a CR-V. Changes that are easiest to see are in the lower fascia, the hood, and the headlights.

Honda Shows Off the First Picture of the 2019 CR-V Fuel Cell

The fuel cell CR-V will be very different from hybrid and non-hybrid cars on the market now. It will be different from other hydrogen-powered cars like the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai because it will be able to plug into a wall. Another part of it is a fuel cell machine that will turn liquid hydrogen fuel into energy that will power an electric motor. When you plug in the CR-V, you’ll be able to charge a small battery pack that powers the electric motor. It has yet to be determined for sure how much more electric range there is, but we expect Honda to tell us soon.

The CR-V’s fuel cell power unit is being made in Michigan by General Motors and Honda, working together. The CR-V fuel cell is already being made, and we plan to sell them later this year. California is the only state that has the facilities to fuel hydrogen cars so that Honda won’t put it on the market anywhere else. Right now, we are still determining if Honda will use a leasing plan or let people buy the cars outright.
