• Hyundai has filed for the title “N74” with the Intellectual Property Office of the European Union.
  • The trademark is the clearest sign that Hyundai wants to make the concept car N Vision 74 from last year.
  • The prototype is a rear-drive sports car with 670 horsepower driven by hydrogen fuel cells and batteries. However, the manufacturer has not officially announced a commercial model.

When automakers decide to make luxurious concept cars, they show a reality; dreams do come true. It made a big splash when Hyundai released the N Vision 74 in South Korea last year. It didn’t take long for car fans, like the ones at Invoice Pricing, to start wondering what Hyundai would have to do to make it. The 7th Mustang online community found that Hyundai has filed the name “Hyundai N74” as a trademark with the EUIPO. However, Hyundai has not confirmed that the car will be made.

The September 20 patent application included “automobiles, sports cars, vans, motor trucks, motor buses, and electric vehicles,” which suggests that the filing is for more than name rights. The EUIPO says that the application is still being looked at.

We tried out the engineering prototype version last year, and it was interesting enough to make us want a business version. That model served as a “rolling lab” test platform for Hyundai’s N performance business, which used it to research possible powertrain upgrades for the future.

Albert Biermann, a former Hyundai-Kia R&D manager now a senior technical advisor, told us then, “It’s hard for me to see us doing it; we don’t need a car like that right now.” Till Wartenberg, Hyundai’s vice president of N brand management and racing, doesn’t have to make all of Hyundai-Kia’s decisions. Wartenberg told The Autopian in an interview earlier this year that he wants the Vision 74 to be made. Wartenberg added, “My personal goal is to make this car.” “I would be thrilled to see this car on the road and being bought by people,” said the speaker. “It’s probably an investment at first.”

Is the fact that Hyundai registered this brand a sign that the N Vision 74 will be made in some way? Not strictly, but based on what Wartenberg said and the most recent trademark application, fans of this car who want to see it on the road in some form are hopeful.
