• The Ford Capri is back! It’s just not how you remember it.
  • Ford’s two-door coupe from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s is back as a mid-sized electric crossover based on the VW Group’s MEB chassis.
  • The base model has rear-wheel drive and a 282-horsepower electric engine. The AWD variant has two 335-horsepower engines.

You may not have been old enough to have seen Vito Corleone’s wake in a theater, or you may not remember when the Ford Capri was at its best. For those of you who remember the classic Capri from the 1970s and 1980s, you may be thinking how the car in the top picture is a Capri. The 2024 Capri is a mid-size electric SUV built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, the same platform as the Explorer EV for the European market. It’s not a two-door coupe meant to be a European ponycar.

In 2024, the Ford Capri will have two doors and electric power

The Ford Capri is like the ID.5 for the company; it’s a coupe, and the electric Explorer is like the ID.4 SUV. The Capri could be more stylish. It isn’t very nice to the eye or offensive in any way. The sharp hips and flat roof make it look a lot like the Polestar 2 car when seen from the side.

There are two trimming choices

It’s never that easy, so when the Capri comes to the UK, there will be two types to choose from, both marked “Extended Range.” Europe’s WLTP test says that the base model, which is a single-motor rear-wheel drive car with 282 horsepower, can go 390 miles. It runs on 77 kWh of power and takes 28 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% fully.

A second electric motor has been added to the Premium model to give it all-wheel drive and 335 horsepower. The battery’s usable capacity goes up to 79 kWh, and its highest charging power goes up from 135 kW to 185 kW. This means that the 10-80% charge cycle takes 26 minutes to complete. Even though the battery is a bit bigger, the Premium model’s improved motor lets it go up to 368 miles at its longest range. It takes 6.4 seconds for the less powerful model to hit 62 mph but only 5.3 seconds for the Premium model.

The Premium trim level comes with a strong engine and a number of nice features. Ford has added a hands-free tailgate to the outside and a B&O music system and ambient lighting to the inside. Both versions will be able to pick a set of 21-inch wheels, but the normal 19-inch alloy wheels will also be swapped out for a pair of 20-inch wheels.

It’s not a surprise that the electric Explorer had a big impact on the Capri’s cabin. A “secret” storage space of 0.6 cubic feet is hidden under the front seat and can be reached through a 14.6-inch touchscreen that slides up and down. “MegaConsole.”

The Capri will be built in Cologne, Germany, even though it won’t be available there. Based on the current exchange rate, the standard model costs $61,731 in the UK, and the Premium trim costs $66,995.
