• Volvo is changing the C40 and XC40 Recharge’s electric drivetrains for 2024.
  • A new base model with 248 horsepower and rear-wheel drive should have a much longer range and cost less.
  • The single-motor version now has a range of 293–297 miles, and the dual-motor AWD version now has a range of 254–257 miles.

Volvo is making some significant changes to its EV range for 2024, such as adding the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge. Both will get a new single-motor, rear-wheel-drive model with a bigger battery and much more range. The current dual-motor, all-wheel-drive models will also get more content because they will be more efficient.

Thanks to a 248-horsepower electric motor and a 79.0 kWh useful battery, the new RWD cars can go 297 miles in the C40 Recharge and 293 miles in the less aerodynamic XC40 Recharge. Volvo says these types can also charge at an improved DC fast-charging rate of 200 kilowatts, which lets them set from 10% to 80% in 28 minutes.

The same 402 horsepower will be made by the dual-motor system in 2024 as in 2018. Volvo says that the electric motors have been changed. The front engine is now an asynchronous type that can be unplugged when not in use, and the back motor has 255 horsepower. With these improvements and the new, more efficient 19-inch wheels, the 75.0-kWh battery in the AWD models can power the car for a much longer distance. The XC40’s rating has increased by 31 miles to 254 miles. The C40’s rating has increased by 226 miles to 257 miles.

Even though Volvo hasn’t released pricing, we expect the RWD models to be cheaper than the 2023 C40 and XC40 Recharge, which were only available with a dual-motor powertrain and started at mid-$50,000. Volvo will sell these 2024 upgraded EVs in the US in the second half of the year.
