• After the 2024 model year, the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R will no longer be offered with a manual transmission.
  • In this model’s last year of production, all manual GTIs will come with a special package called the 2024 GTI 380.
  • Adaptive springs, a particular color, and 19-inch black Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition wheels will come standard on all trim levels.

The VW Golf GTI with a manual gearbox will no longer be made after 2024. The German automaker presented the Golf GTI 380 special edition hot hatch today. They also said every stick-shift GTI will have this kit installed by 2024 to say goodbye to the DIY gearbox. Also, the 315-hp Golf R will no longer have a manual gearbox this year.

The GTI 380, whose name comes from the internal model number of the eighth-generation GTI, has only a few minor changes. The GTI 380 will also come in a unique color called Graphite Gray Metallic, which is not one of the standard colors. The 19-inch black wheels are from the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition and come with summer-ready tires.

All manual 2024 GTIs now have adaptive dampers from the top-level Autobahn model. The roof and side lights are also blacked out to match the wheels. Volkswagen didn’t change anything inside the GTI 380, and it still has the same turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine that all GTIs have. This engine makes 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.

Volkswagen didn’t say why manual transmissions were going out of style, but it’s possible that there were several reasons. As European pollution rules get stricter, Autocar noticed earlier this year that the manual GTI produces more carbon dioxide than the automatic version. This difference is big enough to affect VW’s pollution as a whole.

Even though these rules don’t directly affect the United States, it doesn’t make economic sense to keep the stick shift for only one market, mainly where only 8423 GTIs and Golf Rs, automatic or manual, were sold in 2022. Volkswagen could save money by eliminating the choice of a manual transmission on the GTI assembly line.

Volkswagen says that the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will still be an option for the GTI and Golf R. This fall, you can buy the 2024 GTI 380. The S type will cost you $32,485. The price of the Autobahn is $40,625, while the SE’s is $37,285. Volkswagen has yet to say how much the destination charge will be for the 2024 Golf GTI, so these prices do not include it.
