• Two of Volvo’s current electric cars will get new names that will set them apart from gasoline-powered cars and match the names of future EVs.
  • Because of the change, the C40 recharge is now the EC40, and the XC40 recharge is now the EX40.
  • Plug-in hybrid cars no longer have the “Recharge” mark on them.

To make sure everything is in order, Volvo is rebranding some of its current EVs to fit the names of its future electric-only cars. In 2025, the XC40 Recharge will be called the EX40, and the C40 Recharge will be called the EC40.

In 2025, the XC40 and C40 electric cars will be called Volvo EX40 and EC40, respectively

With the new name, it should be easy to tell the difference between the current generation of electric Volvos and their gasoline-powered counterparts. For example, the XC40 will keep its current name. The electric Volvos will look more like the new EX30 and EX90 models, which will come out in the first half of this year, now that they have new names.

Update for the “Performance” package

The only difference between the EX40 and EC40 is that they will have new logos. The EX40 is an electric subcompact SUV with a slanted roof. The EC40 is its square-backed sister, but they are otherwise the same. In a few countries, Volvo is also releasing a new performance software package. When Invoice Pricing called Volvo to ask if this was true in North America, a company representative declined to speak at this time.

This change makes the dual-motor AWD model’s peak power output 33 horsepower higher. It also changes the code for the accelerator pedal to make it respond faster. The car has 435 horsepower at its peak when it is in “Performance” drive mode, up from 402 horsepower when it has two motors. The software pack is an optional upgrade that customers who want to buy a new 2025 model can choose. However, owners of 2024 cars can also buy and download the update through the Volvo app.

More changes for 2025

After the XC60 Black Edition came out last year, the XC40, EC40, and 2025 EX40 all got Black Editions. The wheels are 20 inches long and have five spokes. They have gloss-black logo trim and onyx black paint. It also gives you two choices for black fabric on the inside.

Volvo is changing the names of these electric cars and taking off the “Recharge” badge from its plug-in hybrids. People in the United States can now get the PHEV form of the XC90, XC60, S90, S60, and V60 models. From now on, only the T6 or T8 suffix will be used to identify the powertrain of plug-in cars.
