Very rarely does the chance come up to buy an original Ford GT40. During its four versions, Ford made just over 100 of the famous sports car, and most of them were used for racing. PistonHeads lists this example, a press car from Ford’s U.K. service, for sale, even though it’s not actually for sale.

Chassis P/1069 is one of the few Mk I GT40s that was bought in “road trim” and built to order by Ford in the United States. At first, the car had a 289-cubic-inch V-8 engine, wire wheels, and map pockets like those on other GT40s that are used on the road. The outside was a Silver Blue that looked like opals.

The finished car was given to a company in Switzerland that was connected to Scuderia Filipinetti. They showed it off at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show. Before it went on show, the GT40 got a fresh coat of green paint. The car was written about in a couple of British auto magazines at the time it was made before it was sold privately in 1971 and again in 2007. Since then, P/1069 has had a pretty open life, showing up at a lot of well-known games and events. The car may have been seen at this year’s Goodwood Festival.

Besides that, there isn’t much else known about the car, but the seller is sure to have a lot of interesting stories for anyone who wants to hear them. The ad doesn’t say how much it’s for, but PistonHeads tells people who might be interested to bring close to eight figures. That shouldn’t be a surprise, since the GT40 has had a devoted following over the years. If you don’t have as much money, you can always get a “cheap” choice from one of the kit car companies.
