Mercedes-AMG is only working on electric cars, and the German carmaker has shared pictures of a prototype of a car that is driving on a lake in Sweden. The electric vehicle’s power will come from a high-voltage battery and axial-flux motors built into the new AMG.EA frame. The shape looks like it was based on the 2022 Vision AMG concept when you look past the camouflage. The 2022 Mercedes Vision AMG concept gave us a sneak peek at the future electric car that the German company’s performance arm will make. Now, we have our first official look at the Mercedes-AMG EV. Official promo photos released this week show a well-hidden prototype testing on a lake in Sweden, blowing up a snow cloud and doing strange slides. Mercedes says that the tests for AMG.EA, the special platform that will support the Mercedes-AMG EV, is “still at the beginning of a demanding and comprehensive test plan.” In Sweden, close to the Arctic Circle, where it got as cold as -13 degrees Fahrenheit, the platform was tested for the first time in the winter. Electric motors with “an unparalleled mix of power density, size, and weight” will be used in the AMG—EA design. A high-voltage battery will power them. It’s hard to see features because the bodywork is so well hidden and seems to be lit in a way that wasn’t allowed by the production standards. The 2022 electric AMG idea looks like it has a similar slanted fastback roof, and its long wheelbase makes it look even longer. The three round parts that make up the design of the prototype taillights look like the concept’s afterburner-style look. The shape also makes me think of the EQXX idea. The electric Mercedes-AMG is expected to have a lot of horsepower and be a straight, if not spiritual, replacement for the AMG GT four-door that runs on gasoline. We don’t know much else about it. At the launch of the concept car, Mercedes said that the car would be on sale in 2025. This means that the US should see it by 2026.
