Fans of cars in the US can’t get their hands on the 2025 Subaru WRX Sportwagon right now, but it’s on its way to Mexico, where it will be sold alongside other illegal goods. For people like you who love cars and live near the southern border and see lots of Mexican cars, the Mexican market seems both very close and very far away. A manual WRX car will be sold near the United States for the first time in a long time, if ever. Usually, it is only sold in Australia and Japan.

The 2025 Subaru WRX Sportwagon, set to be unveiled later this year, is already available for pre-order in Mexico. This model, equipped with a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine that delivers 217 hp at 5,600 rpm and 259 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm, will feature Subaru’s renowned symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. The exciting news is that a six-speed manual gearbox will be standard, and it comes at a relatively affordable price point, reflecting the cost-conscious nature of the Mexican market. In fact, the manual model will be the most economical option available!

Last but not least, Subaru is making a manual WRX car in Mexico

At launch, there will be three model grades, starting with the base WRX High 6MT, which costs 819,900 pesos, or just over $48,500 in today’s money. The WRX tS CVT will cost the most, with a significant markup, coming in at $919,900 pesos.

The Subaru WRX Sportwagon isn’t a brand-new car, of course. According to Autocosmos, it was first called the Subaru Levorg and made its appearance around the world in 2022. The name doesn’t come from “le cyborg,” but it is meant to sound like a mix of the words “tour,” “revolution,” and “legacy.” It makes sense that the car is related to the first name since it used to share a base with the late Legacy sedan and the Impreza or WRX. These kinds of wagons are called “tourist” wagons.

Autocosmos says that the only performance van that will be sold in Mexico is the Subaru WRX. If we look across North America, the WRX Sportwagon would be in good company with brands like Audi and BMW.

Audi sells the RS6 Avant in the US, and BMW has said that the M5 Touring will be sold there someday. The performance of the RS6 Avant and M5 Touring is not really similar to that of the WRX manual wagon, even though they are used for different things. Long-distance sports cars from Audi and BMW cost a lot more than Subaru’s.

If the WRX Sportwagon made it to the American market, it would be a strong competitor to the Audi and BMW wagons, with prices that are a quarter of a mile lower. However, this is likely to happen elsewhere.
