The fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma is made for people who like to go off-road. It has a huge number of trim choices, including two new ones made just for truck drivers who like to play in the mud. In 2024, the TRD Off Road and TRD Pro trim levels will be joined by the PreRunner grade and the brand-new Tacoma Trailhunter grade, which can go off-road. If you look at the specs for the off-road trim levels of the 2019 Tacoma, you’ll see that they come with big, strong tires, which are important for off-road performance. But that is a factory—what would you put in there if you wanted to go bigger? 33s Come Stock is now playable. For the first time, all Tacomas come with 33-inch tires. Before, Tacoma owners had to find the right mix between the offset of the wheels and the make, model, and size of the tires in order to get these big tires to run. On the Trailhunter and TRD Pro models, these 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires come standard. On the TRD Off Road model, you can choose whether or not to get them. Automakers often build features into cars for car enthusiasts that make it possible to put on bigger tires than the ones that come with the car. Even though the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon comes with 33-inch tires, the people who made it might as well have written “cut here” on the plastic sides to help people who want 35- or even 37-inch tires. The installation of the spare tire on the most current Wrangler was also changed to make room for bigger tires without covering up things like the third brake light or the backup camera. After loosening a few nuts that are cleverly placed, it is easy to fit bigger meats in the wheel wells, just like in a modern Bronco. Then, can the Taco ride on tires that are bigger? Off-roaders who wanted to put 35-inch or bigger tires on the previous model of Tacoma bent the suspension to make it work with aftermarket raised suspension systems. They even cut and moved the front body mounts. Will the 2024 Tacoma make it easy to put on 35-inch tires? Sort of is the quick answer. If you want to go big without adding a suspension lift, you’ll have to cut some metal to fit wider tires, even though the biggest factory tire on the 2024 Tacoma is bigger than those on the old Tacoma. Toyota should instead offer a factory-approved lift kit, similar to what was available for the last generation of Tacomas, but without the body-mount tricks that were needed for older models. In the meantime, we’re sure that you’ll be able to get parts for your brand-new Taco that will raise it higher off the ground. After all, the midsize aftermarket will be racing to put 35-inch or even 37-inch tires on the current generation of off-roaders, including Tacomas, since the 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison is coming out this week with 35-inch tires.
