2023 Toyota GR Supra Overview

  • The GR Supra 3.0 can be bought with a manual gearbox.
  • Tools that make handling, steering, and suspension better
  • The GR Supra A91-MT Edition is a car currently part of a limited run.
  • A Supra from the fifth generation that will come out in 2020.

You may be unaware of the connection between the Toyota GR Supra coupe and the BMW Z4 roadster unless it is brought to your attention by a third party. But you can see and feel the shared tech when you drive the GR Supra. But comparing the two sports cars is pointless mainly because Toyota made the GR Supra different from the BMW by designing, calibrating, and making it.

In 2023, there will still be a difference between these fraternal twins. With its turbocharged six-cylinder engine, the GR Supra 3.0 has had an eight-speed automatic transmission for a long time. It is now also equipped with a manual gearbox that has six different speeds. Toyota has stated that all GR Supras will receive new shock springs, which will improve the ride and handling of the vehicle. Additionally, the steering will be improved in the 3.0 models.

The GR Supra’s track mode has been changed to make it easier to drift without losing control, and a new setting called “Hairpin+” lets the wheels spin more when racing out of tight turns while going uphill. A new Anti-Roll Program also kicks in to help the driver keep control if the GR Supra suddenly loses grip when the suspension is set to its most challenging setting.

Along with these changes, a new A91-MT model based on the GR Supra 3.0 and a manual transmission is being made in a limited number. Toyota will only make 500 cars for sale in the United States. For 2023, there is a new Stratosphere Blue paint color and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels available.

The GR Supra is a sporty car with good driving that works well on significant highways and winding mountain roads. Compared to the Porsche 718 Cayman, it is a good deal in terms of performance, even though it is not cheap.

Pros

  • A 3.0-liter engine makes a beautiful sound and has a lot of speed.
  • People who like to drive the old way will be happy with manual gear.
  • Experienced drivers will like how quick and responsive the driving is.
  • When you make this purchase, you will get a lot of value for your money.

Cons

  • There is little room in the cabin, even for small things.
  • Seats are only comfortable for short trips.
  • Even with the windows open, it isn’t quiet inside.

The way the GR Supra is driven. The early Supras focused more on straight-line speed than on being nimble, but the most recent model did well in both areas. During testing by InvoicePricing, our Supra’s six-cylinder engine and automatic drive got it to 60 mph in less than 4.4 seconds. The turning wheel gives you information from the front tires when you turn. The tires have enough grip, and the car seems fun and exciting. Our test Supra stopped from 60 mph in 105 feet thanks to its brakes and sticky tires. It could have used more giant brake pads for more demanding use, like track driving. On the other hand, the GR Supra isn’t just a car for the weekend. It’s an easy-to-use car that you can drive every day.

How well does the GR Supra fit? Even though the seats are very supportive, you might find them too tight over your shoulders. You don’t notice it when going quickly, but when cruising, you do. Because there are no holes in the leather padding, it doesn’t let much air through. The ride is rough but pretty. Since you are so close to the rear axle, it is easier to see significant vertical movements.

Even though there is noise from the road and the wind, this house is not quiet. It’s alright, though. In Sport mode, it makes just the right amount of noise from the intake and the exhaust. Surprisingly, there isn’t a way to get the two zones of the climate control system to work together. It may also be more robust when the fan goes full speed.

How does the inside look? People who know BMW’s old iDrive system can use GR Supra’s entertainment system. But if you have never used the system, you must learn how its menus work. The rest of the settings are easy to understand.

The doors on the Supra are lighter and shorter than those on most cars. Even people of average height may need to watch where they put their heads, but the seat backs don’t make it hard to get in or out. In general, this car has a limited amount of room. The Porsche Cayman and BMW M2 are better at making a roomy cabin than other cars.

How good is the tech? The guidance system can find specific points of interest without an address and follow simple instructions. Voice instructions make it easy to set up your route. Our test Supra came with a high-end sound system with 12 speakers. The sound quality is fine, but it doesn’t have the depth that a more modern design should have. One USB port and a portable charger can be added, and Apple CarPlay works without a wire. Now you can get Android Auto.

The available adaptive cruise control system is reliable. When engaged, it can keep a safe distance between your car and the vehicle ahead of you, making it more proactive than prior systems. It also stops in its tracks. The help for staying in your lane works less well. Even though it keeps you from switching lanes, it doesn’t keep you in the middle.

What about putting things away? The GR Supra is like most sports cars in that it only has a little space for goods. The BMW M2 and Porsche Cayman have larger trunks (10,2 cubic feet). The cargo pass-through to the cabin might be used when carrying heavy things. But these parts must be put on the brace of the rear suspension tower.

Even less room is available for small items in the cabin. Now, there are cupholders where there used to be a bin. Also, putting liquids in them will make it harder to change the settings on the entertainment system. Plus-sized phones won’t fit in the standard wireless charging station with Premium and higher versions. Both the glove compartment and the door pockets are small.

How well does it use gasoline? We thought the GR Supra would be better on gas, but it is. The EPA says the model’s six-cylinder engine gets a combined 26 mpg. On our test trip, we got an impressive 29 mpg, the same as the real-world test.

Is it a good idea to buy a GR Supra? Even though the GR Supra’s interior looks more like a BMW than a Toyota, it still has a great mood and a high-end feel. All six-cylinder models of the Supra come with carbon-fiber trim, a nice touch that sets it apart from the usual coupe. You’ll get a great deal even if you choose the GR Supra with the four-cylinder engine as your first car.

Toyota’s guarantee coverage could be better than its competitors offer—less coverage from bumper to bumper, but better coverage of the engine. Two years of maintenance are also thrown in.

Most of the time, the GR Supra lives up to its name. Yes, it’s clear that this car has a lot of BMW in it, but it’s still a car if you want speed and a sleek look. For the price, the Supra has a lot of styles. As long as you don’t have to haul a lot of stuff or spend a lot of time on bad roads, it’s fast, fun, and comfortable enough to be your daily car.

We picked the GR Supra 3.0 because it has a loud turbocharged inline-six engine, a manual transmission that can be added, and a price that was hard to pass up. The more expensive top trim also has a better infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a great sound system, and several cutting-edge safety technologies.
