• Rivian is now making the Max battery pack for the Dual-Motor R1T and R1S EVs, which has been stalled for a long time.
  • The Max pack costs an extra $16,000 and makes the R1T’s range go from 400 miles to 410 miles, and the R1S’s range stays at 400 miles.
  • Even though R1S Max cells will be sent out later this fall, R1T batteries have already been sent out.

Rivian said late last year that it will no longer sell the high-performance, quad-motor, 835-hp versions of its R1T truck with the most extensive battery pack the company had ever planned to sell. Rivian, on the other hand, has already started making the “Max,” which has a gross capacity of 180 kWh and is called “Max” for the company’s dual-motor EVs. This makes their maximum range estimates much better. The Max bundle costs an extra $16,000.

Compared to the dual-motor version with the Large battery, which can go 352 miles, the R1S Dual-Motor can go 400 miles, according to the EPA. With the Max battery, the R1T works even better. The EPA estimates it can go 410 miles, compared to 352 miles with the Large battery. In the Dual-Motor Performance versions, the range stays the same. Rivian says that the R1S has the most extended range of any electric SUV with seven seats on the market right now and that the R1T is the best electric pickup truck.

For example, the Tesla Model X can go 348 miles, but the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV can only go 305 miles. The Tesla Model Y and the Mercedes-Benz EQB are small electric cars with a third row. Their highest ranges are 330 and 250 miles, respectively. The range of the Kia EV9, which will go on sale this fall, is only about 300 miles.

Customers can add the Max battery to their R1S or R1T immediately, and R1Ts are already on the way with Max packs. Later this fall, people will start to see the R1S with the Max pack in their garages. Rivians from the model years 2023 and 2024 can buy the package.
