• After 44 years and 500,000 G-wagons, Mercedes-Benz is celebrating with a one-off car with a retro look.
  • The unique G-class is based on the form of the 280GE model from 1986.
  • The Agave Green boxy SUV has classic interior features, more giant logos, amber turn lights, and a roof rack.

Forty-four years after the first Mercedes-Benz G-class left the plant in Graz, Austria, the 500,000th one left the factory in grand style. Mercedes made the 500,000th car into a one-of-a-kind G-wagen with a retro look to mark this important milestone.

The German car company has made Gelandewagens for a long time, which could have been the idea for this special edition with a retro look. In the end, the company picked the 1986 280GE. Mercedes may not have chosen the 280GE on purpose, but during the W460 generation (from 1980 to 1991), it had the best engine that ran on gas. On its modern equivalent, the clear turn signals on top of the fenders are now amber instead of Agave Green, one of the first colors offered on early models.

In addition to its throwback paint job, the 500,000th G-class has a black front bumper with guards that hide its round headlights. The whole car is black, from the lower body molding to the rear bumper and the side flares. A more extensive form of the company’s three-pointed star logo can be seen on the spare tire carrier in the back. There is also a ladder on the back that helps you get on the roof rack. Silver five-spoke wheels are one of the unique parts of the one-of-a-kind car.

Mercedes says that the seat inserts of the unique G have fabric with a checkered design that reminds them of older models. No pictures of the inside have been shown. The numbers “500,000” are painted in Agave Green on the grab grip that is located on the passenger side.

For the 2024 model year, the Mercedes-Benz G-class will likely get a new look. A model that runs on electricity alone is also in the works. Mercedes has said that the final product will look like the EQG idea, which is all we’ve seen so far. If the company ever sells a million G-wagons, most of the following 500,000 models will be electric, no matter what.
