In the past few years, Nissan has often admitted that they keep making a model long after it’s no longer needed. One of the oldest cars you can buy in the US right now is the classic 2007 GT-R. On the other hand, the last generation Frontier came out in 2005 and, surprisingly, stayed in store showrooms until 2021. The Y61-generation Patrol, which is now called the Patrol Safari to set it apart from the much younger model sold in our country as the Armada, is another old Nissan that is still on the market around the world. It looks like Godzilla. In order to see a brand-new Patrol Safari in a shop, you have to go to the Middle East or some South American countries, like Bolivia. There is a two-door, five-seater model and a seven-seater, four-door model, which is similar to how the Y61 was released in many countries around the world in 1997. When you look more closely, you can see that the 2025 Patrol is not exactly the same as the original. For instance, the wheel arches feature larger flares, the grille has been modified, and the headlights have been redesigned. The main base, on the other hand, has been there for more than 25 years. The Patrol has a two-tone appearance due to the two paint choices featured in the most recent brochure (dated 2020): White Pearl and Light Gold. There aren’t many changes inside. Nissan changed the look of the center stack, but the driver still sees an analog indicator cluster and a steering wheel with four spokes. In the Middle East, standard features include things like front and back parking sensors, a rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. These are things you might expect to see in 2025. Other popular choices are interior trim that looks like wood and leather upholstery. The brochure you already read has all the information you need about the Y61. One feature it mentions is a “newly-designed pintle hook [that] is useful for towing disabled vehicles.” A tow hook and an electric winch are also built into the front bumper. The South American version is basic. It comes with 16-inch steel wheels, cloth seats, and black plastic bumpers. It has a 4.8-liter straight-six engine that makes 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a five-speed manual transmission and part-time four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case. For an extra fee, you can get a five-speed automatic gearbox. Off-road cars like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Jeep Wrangler have changed over time to look like their ancestors. The Y61 model Patrol was not changed in any way. Even though Nissan’s Middle Eastern business doesn’t say how much the Patrol Safari costs, its website just says, “Get an online quote.” However, the model’s old age doesn’t make it a good deal. As you look through the classified ads in Dubai, you can see that there are a number of 2024 models with delivery miles that cost between AED230,000 and AED255,000, which is roughly $62,700 and $69,500. In the UAE, the starting price for a brand-new, modern Patrol is AED239,900, which is about $65,400. In addition, Nissan of Bolivia doesn’t give rates. How long will it be possible to make the Y61? Many of the news stories and social media posts that say the Y61 has been scrapped are from a few years ago, but this huge, strong SUV is still being made. It should be, so why not? Even though it doesn’t have a hybrid system or a camera to watch the driver, its toughness, authenticity, and abilities make it attractive. In the Middle East, body-on-frame SUVs are also very common, which is a good thing. In 2023, the Nissan Sunny sedan was the most popular car in the United Arab Emirates. It’s not clear if Nissan counts sales of the current generation and the Y61 generation together, but the Patrol came in second. Toyota’s Hilux came in third, ahead of the Land Cruiser in fourth place. This book, The Patrol, sold the most copies in November 2024. Also, the Patrol from the Y61 model is not the oldest SUV on the market anywhere in the world. Toyota’s Australian business still sells a Land Cruiser from the 1970s, which has slightly changed since it was first released in 1984.
