• Bring a Trailer is having an auction for a 2003 Toyota Tacoma that has been customized and fixed until Friday, April 7.
  • This new first-generation Tacoma has fresh body paint, a new frame, and bronze TRD wheels.
  • Minor changes include a new front suspension, grille guard, rock rails, and a steel rear bumper with a tire carrier that can swing away.

Off-roading has been linked to the Toyota Tacoma for almost 30 years. Since the first generation came out for the 1995 model year, its reputation has steadily grown. The 2003 Tacoma SR5 double cab for sale on Bring a Trailer, a Hearst Autos magazine similar to Car and Driver, is a stunningly modified example of the Taco’s attitude.

A completely new taco

The factory-installed color of the 2003 Tacoma seen on BaT, Impulse Red, has been covered up with a fresh coat of paint. It has a bed cap that matches the color of the bed and a roof basket with LED lights around the edges. Also, the car has a new frame from a 2004 model and was painted with POR-15 to keep it from rusting.

This Tacoma looks even better now that it has a new suspension. It has a better Fox 2.0 coil-over suspension and front upper control arms that have been changed. The solid rear axle of the truck is held up by a set of leaf springs that raise the ride height and better shock absorbers.

The engine and drivetrain of the Taco haven’t changed in any way that can be seen. It has a 3.4-liter V-6 engine, an automatic transmission with five speeds, and four-wheel drive. It was said to have 190 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque when it was new. It has been driven about 89,000 miles.

Sauces for tacos

This Taco tastes excellent because it comes in so many different kinds. Its red color matches the 17-inch TRD wheels with fake beadlock rings painted bronze. They have BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 tires that are 265/75R-17. The rear tire carrier also has a spare tire, a high-lift jack, and extra fuel tanks.

You can reach the covered cargo bed when the back part swings open. It has a steel bumper with red tow hooks below it. Third-party rock rails and a full-length front grille guard with an integrated light bar protect the body even more. The front skid plate is one of the parts of the car’s undercarriage that can protect it from damage from pebbles and other debris.

The throwback interior of the Taco reminds everyone that this is a truck from the 2000s. However, the charcoal upholstery is in great shape, and it looks like the sun damage on the dashboard has been fixed. This 2003 model has a Pioneer stereo system with SiriusXM satellite radio and access to Spotify music for people who don’t want to deal with tapes or CDs. The tablet is also the screen for the backup camera.

As of this writing, there is a bid of $17,000 on Bring a Trailer for a 2003 Toyota Tacoma SR5 double cab. On Friday, April 7, the auction will end.
