Some high-end electric cars made by Audi and Porsche have been recalled because of a problem with the batteries that could cause them to explode. Audi’s recall report says that the Taycan’s problems started with a battery that was known to be bad. That part has been acting up in the past. It is made by LG Energy Solution Wroclaw in Poland. In September 2023, Porsche had to call back about 5,000 2023 Taycans because the batteries were melting and sealing into the motors. At that point, Audi joined the talk. The study found that “the Audi E-Tron GT is a substantially similar vehicle” to Porsche’s first electric car, except for the annoying battery. By December 2023, when Porsche told Audi about a possible problem, things had gotten worse. The problem had moved from the sealer to the paint. There was a chance that the battery would get too hot and short out, which is what the NHTSA calls a “thermal event.” Other people start these fires. The company said on March 22 that it had “not heard of any warranty claims, injuries, crashes, or fires due to this issue.” Porsche could have had better luck. The Porsche recall, which was just made public this month, covers battery fires in Taycans that happened as early as 2021. NHTSA documents say that 749 Porsche Taycans from 2021 to 2024 and 1,013 Audi E-Tron GTs and RS E-Tron GTs from 2022 to 2024 are being recalled. At the moment, both companies are telling owners only to charge their cars to 80% of their capacity.
