The R35-generation Nissan GT-R was first shown off in 2007 when I was a senior in high school. That happened seventeen years ago, which is scary because it explains why my hairline is quickly receding. The R35 GT-R has aged much better than I have, so it’s too bad that 2025 may be the last year for it. It’s been a long time coming.

A story in the Japanese car magazine Mag X said that by 2025, only 1,500 of the R35-generation Nissan GT-R would be made, with 300 of those being Nismo versions. Although Mag X didn’t say if the 1,500 units would only be sold in Japan or all over the world, the small number of models made suggests that they might only be available in some places.

Report: The 2025 Nissan GT-R might be the last R35

For the 2024 model year, the GT-R received a number of updates. It now has better aerodynamics and styling, and the Nismo version has more power. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine in the regular GT-R makes 565 horsepower, and the Nismo GT-R makes 600 horsepower. Does anyone think the 2025 model has more power? If not, Nissan might give it a little extra as a goodbye gift.

Younger fans may not fully understand how the R35 GT-R’s release affected things since they still needed driver’s licenses. When it first came out, the R35 was a new idea. Most of the world’s best supercars were up against it, and it beat them all. The world fell in love with this racecar, which was half the price of similar cars made in Germany and Italy. However, every high-end exotic could match its dealer network and warranty program. It also had the reliability and comfort you’d expect from a Nissan. It’s hard to overstate how much the GT-R changed the market.

It will be sad to see the R35 Nissan GT-R go if 2025 is really the last year for the model. It’s getting old and being overshadowed by a lot of younger supercars and sports cars.
