Most of you already know that the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 are almost the same cars, except for their logos. So, it’s strange that the Subaru had a rough May while the Toyota is doing better than ever. There’s more to this story, but these facts are very scary. There were 1,981 GR86 cars sold by Toyota last month, while only 227 BRZ sports cars were sold by Subaru.

The sales of Subarus and Toyotas are clearly very different, but Toyotas have regularly sold more than Subarus. However, the recent drop in BRZ sales is scary for Toyobaru fans in the US because it could mean the end of the blue-badged car.

Sales of the Toyota GR86 go up, but sales of the Subaru BRZ go down

However, the news is not as positive for Subaru fans and potential buyers. The sales of the Subaru BRZ took a significant hit, dropping by a staggering 64.4% compared to the same month last year when Subaru sold 638 BRZs. A closer look reveals that only 1,171 units have been sold so far this year through May 2024, a stark contrast to the 2,130 units sold in the first five months of 2023. This means that sales of the Subaru car have plummeted by 45% so far this year, a trend that is cause for concern.

Exciting news for Toyota enthusiasts and potential buyers! The sales of the Toyota GR86 skyrocketed, marking a 104.4% increase in May 2024 compared to the same month the previous year. This was the model’s best month for sales in the United States. In fact, in January, Toyota sold more GR86s than Subaru did all year for the BRZ. This surge in sales is a promising sign for the future of the GR86.

The two cars are pretty much the same in price and ability. There is a slight price difference between the 2024 Subaru BRZ ($31,315) and the 2024 Toyota GR86 ($30,395, delivery fees included). It doesn’t seem likely that a difference of less than $1,000 would affect sales, but it’s hard to say why.

The Toyota model would sell more than the Subaru, at the very least. Without question, Toyota’s huge popularity, which means it has a bigger dealer network, may help explain some of the differences. Sales will go up, and the two companies can continue to split the costs of development and production. The Toyobaru twins are great cars, but their future is, at best, uncertain without both companies.
