In the early 1990s, Volkswagen’s Mk3 Golf Harlequin was one of the most interesting and unique cars on the market. The VW Harlequin was actually a regular Mk3 Golf on the inside. The “Harlequin” look came from painting the body parts in four different colors. Volkswagen only made 264 Golf Harlequins for the American market. Jim Ellis, who owned two Volkswagen dealerships in Georgia, changed the body panels to make them unique. As a result, they are the only single-color “Harlequins” in the country. However, the goal was not to make them stand out more.

Tornado Red, Pistachio Green, Ginster Yellow, and Chagall Blue were used to paint Volkswagen Golf Harlequins. People who like Volkswagen used to want Harlequins, but some say that demand started to drop before Ellis could sell all of his stock. He chose to swap the body parts of eight different cars to make cars with only one color that would appeal to more people.

Single-Hue Harlequins made by VW Golf dealers made an already rare car even rarer

Since all eight were sold and then turned up on the used car market, single-color cars are now very rare, and VW fans want them very much. So, cars that were once one-of-a-kind oddballs straight from the plant were later changed to look like any other car, only to become even rarer and more valuable than they were before.

There is a one-color Chagall Blue Golf Harlequin for sale on Facebook Marketplace. It is said to be car number 123. The seller told Jim Ellis in Georgia that the car was the only all-Chagall Blue Harlequin that had ever been made when they brought it to him. Inside, like all Harlequins, the seats are made of gray cloth with a unique design that uses all four Harlequin colors.

The Harlequin looks bright, but it works like a normal Mk3 Golf underneath. The front wheels are still only driven by its five-speed manual gear, and the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is still only putting out 115 horsepower. Fans will go wild over it even though it’s not fast or sporty. It’s a unique and interesting piece of Volkswagen’s history.
