• A mid-cycle update for the 2025 GMC Yukon adds a new look, a better diesel engine range, and a redesigned dashboard.
  • All trim levels now have the new 3.0-liter diesel inline-six engine, which makes 305 horsepower (up from 277) and 495 pound-feet of torque (up from 460).
  • Price announcements are expected closer to the release date of the ’25 Yukon and longer Yukon XL, which are set to debut in dealerships later this year.

The Cadillac Escalade no longer has an oil-burning engine, but the GMC Yukon does. For the 2025 model year, the Yukon will get a mid-cycle update that will add the engine. The full-size SUV from GMC also gets a change, and the lighting design is based on the new GMC Sierra Electric Vehicle. New designs have been made to the inside of the Yukon and Yukon XL with the longer wheelbase. There is now a big tablet in the middle that stands upright.

The 2025 GMC Yukon update includes a more desirable diesel engine

A better diesel engine

The Duramax diesel 3.0-liter inline-six engine will be standard on every GMC Yukon starting in 2025. The AT4 trim, which is designed for off-road use, wasn’t on the list before. The Yukon’s diesel engine has been changed to make more power, just like the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban. The new Durmax has 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, which is more than the old model’s 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This is sent to the Yukon’s rear axle or all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic gear.

The all-wheel-drive system got 22 mpg combined last year, while the rear-drive motor got 23 mpg. We don’t know if GMC’s new diesel engine will be more fuel efficient because the company is still waiting for EPA approval. It comes with two V-8 engines: a 5.3-liter engine with 355 horsepower and a 6.2-liter engine with 420 horsepower.

The Yukon line-up looks different, too. The SLE and SLT trims have been replaced by the entry-level Elevation model. The AT4 Ultimate, designed for off-road fans, now has more high-tech features. The top-of-the-line AT4 has 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, an air suspension that can be adjusted for height, full-grain leather on all three rows of seats, and better materials inside the trim, like Ash Wood.

Even more technology is being made

GMC has completely changed the Yukon’s dashboard, which now has a 16.8-inch touchscreen that is raised vertically. You can use it wirelessly with your Apple CarPlay or Android Auto device. It also has built-in Google software that voice orders can activate. The user can change the appearance of the screen by using their favorite apps. A static menu at the bottom of the screen lets you get to the HVAC controls, which are a row of real toggle switches. There is a secret hiding space above the middle stack, and the front cubby now has covers that can be pulled back. The Yukon still has its original volume knob and a 22-speaker Bose sound system with speakers built into the headrests. We also like GMC’s choice to replace the old push-button shifter with a new lever on a column.

Top Yukon trims have headlights and taillights that light up and play a movie when the SUV is locked and opened. Also, each trim level has its grille design. There is also a unique hands-free liftgate feature that opens instantly when a key fob user gets close. Infrared night vision is added to the Yukon by GMC. This helps the driver by showing a picture of the cluster of gauges. Some of the new active safety features are technology that lets you know when approaching traffic is coming up on you when you’re going left at an intersection, self-driving brakes, and alerts for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Yukon has many trailering tools and can still pull up to 8,400 pounds. It has camera view directions, a blind-spot monitor, a way to find a broken trailer tire, and a warning about the dreaded jackknife for backing up your 30-foot Jayco.

The 2025 GMC Yukon will be shown in stores later this year. Each model will cost a few thousand dollars more than before. The company says prices will be announced closer to the time.
