All the mid-engined Mustang racecar rumors this week made a bad situation worse. The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD isn’t just a roadster—more than a quick automobile. Ford tossed an F-22 Raptor, Shelby GT500, Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and other cars in a blender.

The Mustang GTD is a Mustang, despite popular belief. The frame will be utilised to manufacture Mustangs at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly factory in Michigan before being transported to Multimatic. The legendary technical company that built the Ford GT, V8 Bronco DR, Mustang GT3, and GT4. The GTD and GT3 were made simultaneously. The IMSA class where the GT3 will race inspired its name. Since it doesn’t have to follow the rules, the Mustang GTD performs better.

The Mustang GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine may be related to the GT500’s powerplant from the previous generation. With 800 horsepower, Ford’s most powerful street-legal Mustang engine is the first to use dry-sump oiling. It features a working titanium exhaust system and can exceed 7,500 rpm. That sounds terrible.

All that power flows through a back-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle with a carbon fibre driveshaft to split the weight in half. The GTD has carbon fibre fenders, hood, roof, trunk lid, splitter, and diffuser for lightness. The material can also be used for front and rear trim. Without a back seat, it boasts 20-inch forged aluminium wheels and a tubular rear subframe for strength. They’re magnesium too.

These wheels have some of the most giant road car tires. The GTD has 345mm rear wheels and 325mm front wheels. This is 10 millimetres larger than GT500 rears. The Mustang GT has a four-inch smaller track than the GTD.

The GTD has extraordinary heat with semi-active suspension that changes spring rates, ride height by 1.6 inches, and spool-valve dampers. Pushrods regulate inboard shocks on the double-wishbone and multi-link front and rear suspensions. It drives with a hydraulically adjustable back wing. An aero kit is possible. Imagine a car with a carbon fibre chassis and moving front flaps to balance the rear wing.

Changing steering wheel settings for Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and variable traction control are also included. Airborne improvements can improve this system and others on board.

Ford finds it absurd that the “fastest street-legal Mustang ever” can circuit the Nürburgring in seven minutes. Given how close the significantly less powerful Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE came, the Mustang GTD should finish in under seven minutes.

I didn’t compare it to an F-22 Raptor because of that. Only one component. So some say. The titanium paddle shifters, rotary dial shifter, and number plate were F-22 parts. The interior has leather, artificial fur, and carbon fiber, and the seats are Recaro. If you want a Mustang GTD, Ford will provide primary colors and paint-to-sample, which is cheaper.

This is because the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD may cost $300,000. Customers will receive these automobiles around 2024–2025. Ford won’t say how many will be built. After being driven on the street, it won’t be a sparkling track toy. You might see one; its titanium exhaust will make that day memorable.
