It will be an Acura ZDX Type S that sets the pace for the 102nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in June. The ZDX, as the first electric car to be the official pace car for the Race, marks a significant milestone in Acura’s decade-long tradition of providing the hill climb pace car. Coco Zurita, a highly skilled BMX rider and amateur drifter at the X Games, has been chosen to drive the ZDX Type S pace car up the mountain, instilling confidence in the audience about the driver’s capabilities. Acura will race in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb later this summer with the world’s first electric pace car. On June 23, the well-known Race to the Clouds will happen for the 102nd time. For the past ten years, Acura has funded the official pace car of the Race. This year, the brand is going all out by sending the 2024 ZDX Type S SUV to pace. Acura picked Coco Zurita to drive the ZDX. Zurita is a professional BMX rider and amateur drifter who competed in the X Games. Before this year’s Long Beach Grand Prix, he revealed a 2024 TLX Type S build that he did for Acura. The next year, he made a custom 2023 Integra build for the SEMA show. Now, he will drive the fastest electric SUV, the ZDX, up the hill climb, which has 156 turns and is 12.42 miles long. When we drove the ZDX Type S for the first time, we noticed that it wasn’t unique enough to set itself apart from other sporty EV crossovers, but it was still very sporty. The two motors in the Type S work together to make 499 horsepower and 544 pound-feet of torque, which should be enough to get the electric crossover to 60 mph in as little as four seconds. The most expensive Type S costs $74,850, but the federal tax credit of $7,500 can be used toward it. The A-Spec cars with rear- or all-wheel drive, which start at $65,850 and $69,850, are also great deals. We have yet to have the chance to test-drive them, though.
