• The Audi Q6 e-tron Off-Road Concept Enhances the Automaker’s New Electric SUV with All-Terrain Capability.
  • Audi says that the newly created portal axles make the wheel torque 50% higher.
  • The Q6 e-tron Off-Road is 6.3 inches higher and has a 9.8-inch wider track compared to the standard Q6 e-tron Sportback.

In October of last year, our spy photographer caught a strange Audi prototype being tried on public roads. The tall car was built on a Q6 e-tron Sportback and had durable tires with a wide track. It also had a beautiful roof rack. By releasing the Q6 e-tron Off-Road concept, Audi has finally shown what it can do. This idea takes its latest electric SUV to a whole new level.

The Audi Q6 e-tron Off-Road Concept Has Portal Wheels And Big Tires

Audi upgraded the Q6 e-tron’s suspension the most by adding four portal wheels. The suspension links had to be changed because the portal axles were built into the wheel hubs. Audi says these portal axles were built from the ground up and have a new design that lets the SUV increase torque at the wheel by 50%. With a normal portal-axle design, torque at the wheel would only go up by 20% to 30%.

They say that the overall torque at all four wheels is 9883 pound-feet for a 10-second burst. This is the torque at the wheels after the portal axles’ gear ratios are increased by them. It is not the torque output of the electric motors, as is usually written. GMC used a similar number in its Super Bowl ad for the 2020 Hummer EV.

Even though the torque figure is wrong, the portal axles should make it easier for the Q6 e-tron Off-Road concept to handle different types of terrain. The new suspension system makes the track 9.8 inches wider, which gives it a heavy, broad-shouldered look. It also raises the ride height by 6.3 inches. Audi says that because of all the improvements, the idea can go up and down hills of up to 45 degrees.

The dual-motor electric engine in the Q6 e-tron Off-Road, which makes 510 horsepower, is likely the same as the one in the sportier SQ6 e-tron. Because of the portal axles and big tires, it can only go as fast as 108 mph, which is fine for an off-road car.

We still don’t know what Audi wants to do with the Q6 e-tron Off-Road design. “It will be interesting to see how our customers react to this very emotional car,” CEO Gernot Döllner said in a press release. He also says that the car is a test. Audi seems to be testing the seas for a car that will probably only be made in small numbers. In any case, it’s not often that automakers try concept cars on public roads while they’re hidden.

However, Audi has already shown that it wants to get into the off-road SUV market. The AI: Trail Quattro concept from 2019 was a crazy-looking all-terrain electric pod. The Activesphere concept from 2023, on the other hand, was a sleek pickup truck SUV mix. The famous Carlos Sainz drove an Audi RS Q e-tron racecar to victory in the 2024 Dakar Rally. The Q6 e-tron Off-Road looks like a good preview of a future production car. This is especially true since Audi is still interested in off-road cars.
