In 1960, obtaining a Mercedes-Benz wagon required relying on a coachbuilder. Based on 190, Binz made this version. Even though it’s a standard useful piece, it will definitely get more attention at the next MB event than many of the brand’s expensive sports cars. Currently, the Mercedes-Benz E-class All-Terrain is one of the only station wagons Americans can buy. However, before the E-class wagon took over the suburbs, a long-roof Mercedes-Benz was a much better choice—but harder to find. Take a look at this 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190b Kombiwagen that is for sale on Bring a Trailer, a website owned by Hearst Autos, the company that produces cars and drivers. Binz made the coachbuilt Kombiwagen body for the old Mercedes Pontoon W121. Binz is a German company that has been making coaches for a long time. It was founded in 1936 and made many types of working vehicles, such as fire trucks and ambulances. It usually built limos and other cars on Mercedes-Benz frames. The W121 first came out in the middle of the 1950s. It was a useful four-door sedan with a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine that had plenty of room for passengers. You could get the sporty 190SL convertible if you needed a little more zip, but the car was as practical as they come. Even so, the model gives off an air of stateliness, like your aunt dressed for Sunday. A recent fix and refurbishment have improved this 190 Binz Kombiwagen. The inside was redone with modern MB-Tex vinyl in a stylish smoke color that complements the burgundy outside. Chrome has also been improved. A four-speed manual gearbox and a 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine made a little more than 100 horsepower back in the day. It has been properly inspected, and more technical repairs have been made, such as fixing the exhaust system, resealing the gas tank, and moving some wires around. Everything is finished and ready to go. You won’t get a speeding ticket on the way to the local car meet, and this interesting collectible, which is the great-grandfather of today’s Benz wagon, is a great thing to bring. December 18 is the last day to bid.
