The seventh version of the Ford Mustang was born and raised in the racing scene. When it first came out, Ford showed off several race cars based on the V-8-powered 2024 Mustang. These included the NHRA drag racer and the Dark Horse R track toy. At the 24 Hours of Spa, Ford showed off its new Mustang GT4, which will be the starting point for drivers who want to learn how to race wheel-to-wheel.

This month, the Mustang GT3 was shown off, and now the GT4 is also confirmed. The SuperVan 4.2, which recently raced in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, has the same bright orange, red, and purple paint job with the new, simplified Ford Performance sign. The Ford GT4, built on the Dark Horse and can be driven on public roads, fills the gap between the GT3 and the Dark Horse R. GT4 cars have less speed and less downforce than GT3 cars.

The car meets the SRO’s standards for the GT4 category. This means it can compete in GT4-only races in Europe and the US and with a mix of GT3 and GT4 cars, like the British GT Championship. Ford will enter the GT3 in the World Endurance Championship’s 24 Hours of Le Mans next year. This is a more renowned race than the GT3. In IMSA’s GTD Pro class, the GT4 car will only be driven by customer teams, while a factory-backed team will go with the GT3 car. In 2017, the Ford Mustang GT4 made its first race.

Ford worked closely with Multimatic, a Canadian tech company making the most recent Ford GT and several limited-edition Aston Martins like the Valkyrie. The engine is a V-8 built on the Coyote platform and tuned for race by Ford Performance. Ford will also make it in Dearborn, Michigan, but no other details about the engine were given.

The GT4 is lighter and has Multimatic spool-valve shocks because its body is made of natural fibers. The Hollinger dog-ring gearbox has paddle shifters that are moved by air pressure, and the car’s aerodynamics are set up for GT4 racing. Even though the GT4’s diffuser is smaller than that of the GT3, and its fenders are thinner, it still has a big rear wing that sticks out from the trunk lid. The driver is comfortable on the Recaro race seats, and the inside is almost identical to the GT3.
