• After a short run in 2020, Toyota will make the Hakone version of the GR86 sports car again in 2025.
  • Like the Trueno edition from last year, this special edition has a Performance pack with Brembo brakes and Sachs springs.
  • Toyota says that all trim levels will be available this fall. In the US, only 860 of the Hakone version will be sold.

No, this isn’t just for St. Patrick’s Day. It’s the second version of the special edition Toyota GR86 Hakone. Toyota is bringing back the Hakone version of its light sports car for 2025 after a limited run in 2020. Like last year’s Trueno model, it comes with a Performance package that includes better brakes and springs.

The Hakone Edition of the 2025 Toyota GR86 has better performance than the original

Also, like in 2020, the Hakone version is finished in a beautiful shade of green called Ridge Green. The modified Hakone version has a much flatter paint job than the original, which makes it less shiny. The look is finished off with 18-inch shiny bronze wheels and a ducktail spoiler in the same color. A limited-edition shift knob with bronze accents and tan leather trim has been added to the inside of the Hakone.

It is based on the 86’s Premium trim level and comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic transmission. The Hakone has the same Performance Pack that was first seen on the Trueno model last year. The kit adds Sachs springs and Brembo brake rotors with a bigger diameter than the base model.

Hakone has become increasingly focused on sports. Toyota also changed the electric power steering and shock absorbers in the GR86 series to make the light car last longer. In 2025, changes to the torque control and throttle setting for cars with regular manual transmissions should make it easier to match revs and improve throttle response.

Toyota hasn’t yet said how much the 2024 GR86 and its extra features will cost, but we should know more before it goes on sale later this year.

Only 860 of the special versions will be made in the United States. We have yet to find out how much the Hakone version or any other 2025 GR86 models will cost, but we should find out before they go on sale in the fall.
