• Nissan showed off a brand-new concept car before putting it on display at the Tokyo auto show.
  • Its sharp design language hints at the Japanese brand’s likely future style.
  • The fantastic inside of the idea includes seats facing each other so it can run itself.

We love minivans and future concept cars, so we can’t wait for Nissan‘s beautiful Hyper Tourer to be shown off at the Tokyo Motor Show next week.

The Hyper Tourer Concept from Nissan for Tokyo is a van

The Hyper Tourer mostly looks like a design teaser for Nissan’s next wave of designs; it’s clear that this is not a “close to production” concept car showing off a new car. The company showed off a second Tokyo launch earlier this month: the Hyper Urban idea, which is lower and more streamlined. The company’s following goods will probably have a form language that is much more angular.

Ads for the electric Hyper Tourer say it “re-imagines the group road trip by combining the comfort of a luxurious living room with the convenience of a passenger van—all contained in a stylish and futuristic package.”

The last point is met, as the body panels are a mix of smooth body panels and “sharp character lines” meant to look like traditional Japanese beauty. The Hyper Tourer’s design has a white accent line separating the glass from the metal. The ultra-slim headlights are part of this line, and the wide front panel and wheels have Kumiko patterning, a traditional Japanese pattern made from connected wooden bars.

However, the Hyper Tourer’s interior is where the real fun starts, thanks to a tremendous amount of room (thanks to solid-state batteries, Nissan says) and some beautiful design features. The room has two sliding doors that lead to four separate chairs. When the car doesn’t need a driver, the front seats turn around to face the back seats.

You’ll have to use your imagination, just like with other technologies that have been said to exist. This is especially true since Carlos Ghosn, the former CEO of Nissan who is now wanted on foreign charges, said three years ago that the company would introduce fully autonomous driving. But it’s good to know that the dream is still going strong.

In a more traditional Japanese style, the back of the Hyper Tourer looks good. Still, it also has a big flat LED panel display built into the floor that can show pictures of the sky and a riverbed to, as the company says, “help create a relaxing space where digital and nature are fused.” People in the back seats can use a wearable display to see and change the sound and navigation settings so they don’t feel left out. It looks like something other than the Hyper Tourer will be made, and if it is, it will only be sold in the United States.
