Acura showed off the Performance EV Concept at Monterey Car Week. It’s a sneak peek at the brand’s new electric SUV, which will come out next year. Head of design Dave Marek says that parts of this concept’s design will be used in future Acura cars. When this concept is made in late 2025, it will be the first electric vehicle (EV) based on Honda’s new EV design. It will be made in southern Ohio, where the company has set up a new manufacturing area for electric vehicles. The 2024 ZDX is Acura’s first electric car, and this Performance EV Concept shows a sneak peek of the company’s next model. This is important because it’s the first car to use Honda’s brand-new internal EV base. This is different from the ZDX, which is made by General Motors and shares a platform with the Cadillac Lyriq. The Performance EV Concept will debut at Monterey Car Week and be shown at The Quail and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Lawn. The idea is an SUV with a short windshield that looks more like the 2010–2013 ZDX than the new EV with the same name, which is not surprising. It has a striking two-tone look because the roof and pillars are completely blacked out. According to Dave Marek, Acura’s head of design, future Acura cars will use design elements from the Performance EV Concept, like the rounded edges, vented hood, and strong vertical features on the body side. Acura has kept the concept’s size a secret, so we will know how big it is once we see it in person. The company says that all of its next electric cars will have the letters A-C-U-R-A written in the same style over the back liftgate. Honda is remodeling its engine plant in nearby Anna for $700 million to help make electric cars. The Honda Accord, Acura TLX, and Integra are made in Marysville, Ohio; the Honda CR-V, Acura RDX, and MDX are made in East Liberty; and the Honda engine factory is in Marysville, Ohio. The battery cells for these electric cars will come from a joint partnership with LG Energy. The first version of this electric car concept will leave this Ohio factory. It will go on sale in late 2025.
