• The Toyota MR2 Spyder is an unusual choice for a low-cost sports car. It answers the hypothetical question, “What if Toyota made a Boxster?”
  • This model has a few miles on it and looks great outside.
  • The sale will last until April 17th.

It’s hard to find cheap sports cars, but everything was fine in the mid-2000s. Then, after stopping by the Mazda dealer, you can go to Toyota, where Miata Isn’t Always The Answer if you want a cheap roadster. This week’s auction has a low-mileage Toyota MR2 Spyder, a reliable and more affordable choice to a Porsche Boxster or Lotus Elise. Bring A Trailer is part of Hearst Autos, just like Car and Driver.

You could have bought two MR2 Spyders and worn them like shoes for the price of one new Porsche Boxster. The current second-generation Mazda MX-5 was much shorter, lighter, and mid-engined than the MR2, which was also fast and fun to drive.

You can still find used early Boxsters for a fair price, but the complexity and cost of water-cooled Porsche parts can still steal a month’s pay without warning. The standard Toyota is different. The makers of the MR2 brought the third-generation sports car back to its more affordable roots by giving it a small size and a 1.8-liter engine that it shares with the Celica GT.

The first-generation MR2 was made to be fun for the average person. It looked like a small cross between a cheese wedge and an A-Wing fighter from Star Wars. This pattern continued with the second model, which was faster, had a more complicated turbocharger, and was a little harder to drive.

The third-generation car was back in the accessible mode because it weighed 2200 pounds and had 138 horsepower. Even though the MR2’s power-to-weight ratio isn’t as good as a Lotus Elise, it starts every Sunday like a Corolla, which isn’t true for a brand whose fans often joke, “Lots of Trouble, Usually Serious.”

This one was made in the second-to-last year of production. It has a five-speed manual transmission, but an SMG was also offered. It looks great and has only 18,000 miles on it. It would be much better if a particular Red Collection version had redder. It has a red convertible top and red seats, which seem minor details but make the gray car look much better.

The latest model of the MR2 has a few problems. Because it’s set up to be a little more polite than raw, it can make you feel more intensely driven. Also, there is a minimal amount of storage space. When you go for a drive with a friend, there is only a little room for more than one lunch, so you’ll have to share.

This MR2 will sell for more money than a Mazda MX-5 of the same year and shape because it is rarer and less common. While we wait, we can all imagine what kind of mid-engined roadster Toyota could make today with the three-cylinder turbocharged engine from the GR Corolla.
