One of Japan’s most famous luxury cars for many years has been the Toyota Century. Toyota made the new Century SUV to compete with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. It has room for four people, a luxurious cabin, and even doors that fold up excellently.

Built on Toyota’s modular TNGA base, the Century SUV resembles the Cullinan. It looks like Rolls-Royce’s one SUV because of its boxy body, high front end, and big C-pillar. If you showed me the Century, the shape of the SUV, I would know it was a Cullinan.

When the Century SUV comes out, there will be two models: a regular one and a more sporty-looking one with a GR badge. There are no types with five seats, and both only have four. The Century SUV is only for you if you like captain’s chairs in the back. Once inside, though, no one will argue because both back seats slide and relax like first-class airline seats and have huge armrests with two Windows-based tablets and entertainment screens.

The people in the front seats will also be happy. The inside of the Toyota Century SUV has a multi-level dashboard, elegant trim, and a vast tablet entertainment system, making it the best interior the company has ever made for a non-Lexus vehicle. On the other hand, the 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid engine will make the driver happier than the front passenger. Toyota says that it can go 33 miles just on its power.

The Century SUV’s best features differ from its hybrid solid V6 engine or great rear seat plan. The most exciting thing about Toyota’s Cullinan-fighter is its available sliding back doors. The GR, the more athletic model, has sliding doors that open outward, like a minivan for CEOs. If Rolls-Royce thought its doors that extended from the back were fancy, it should wait until it saw these sliding doors.

There’s a reason why minivans have folding doors. No other type of door makes it easier to get people inside. If you choose the standard model, the back doors open regularly, up to 75 degrees. This means people in the back can get in and out without getting their well-fitted suits messed up.

Like the Cullinan, the Century SUV has a laminated glass wall between the back seat and the trunk to keep those people in the back very comfy. When the driver takes bags out of the box in bad weather, the people in the back of the car are not open to the weather. The driver can also choose a “Rear Comfort” mode, which changes how the accelerator, brakes, and steering work for the comfort of the people in the back.

Instead of replacing the sedan, the Century SUV will be offered along with it. Only approved Toyota dealers will be able to sell the SUV, and customers will be able to customize it in the same way that their British competitors can. It will cost around $170,000 when it sells in Japan. (At least for now, there are no plans for sales in the United States.) At the moment, it costs less than a Cullinan and has similar back seat features and much cooler rear doors.
