• Toyota’s EPU is a brand-new idea for an electric pickup truck.
  • The EPU idea is 199.6 inches shorter than a Tacoma.
  • The Tokyo car show is where we’ll get to see it for the first time, and it looks like it will be made soon.

A new idea called the EPU, which we think stands for “electric pickup,” has made people talk more about a possible future electric Toyota car. The EPU is a crew-cab pickup truck with four doors that will be shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. It is much shorter than the Tacoma, with a length of only 199.6 inches. Because it only has one body, it could compete with cars like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

The Toyota EPU concept shows an electric pickup truck ready for production

It will likely be built on a brand-new electric design, even though Toyota hasn’t given us any technical information. Its long wheelbase, at 131.9 inches, is much longer than the Maverick’s. It’s in the middle of the Tacoma’s short-bed and long-bed types. The truck has some odd measurements, which can be explained by the back axle being farther back than we usually see on a small pickup.

The outside form of this EPU doesn’t show any strange ideas, so it looks like it will be made soon. The inside looks futuristic, with big screens, a simple dashboard, and a driving wheel shaped like a yoke.

This looks very different from Toyota’s last idea for a mid-size electric truck, which was shown a few years ago. It looked like that car was more like the 2024 Tacoma, which suggests that Toyota may have a lot of electric trucks in the works. We wouldn’t be surprised if either came to the American market, but it’s not a given. Toyota will show off the EPU idea the following week at the Tokyo Motor Show. More information should be available soon.
