• Toyota showed off the lovely FT-Se sports car prototype and the FT-3e concept, a future SUV.
  • The FT-3e resembles the Toyota bZ4X crossover, with its sloping roofline and two-piece back spoiler.
  • There are several screens around the driver in this modern, well-lit cabin.

The bZ4X SUV, Toyota’s first all-electric car, has failed. Toyota revived the bZ4X earlier this year, after a recall and sales halt hampered the first launch due to wheels that could come off. Due to the short real-world drive range, sales have stayed low. Only 6486 units have been sold through September. On the other hand, Toyota is working hard to make solid-state batteries that can be charged faster and have a more extended range. The Tokyo Motor Show’s FT-3e idea points to a possible replacement for the bZ4X.

The Toyota FT-3e design shows what the next-generation bZ4X will look like

The idea behind the FT-3e has been made public

Even though Toyota didn’t give any specifics, they did say that the FT-3e was a “next-generation” electric car with “personalized services powered by innovative technologies.” One thing that makes the car look modern is the digital screens that go along the doors and the length of the car, bent up to meet the hip line. Toyota says that as a driver approaches the FT-3e, these screens on the outside will show essential information like the battery charge level, the temperature inside, and the quality of the air inside.

With its squat shape and wheels pushed to the edges of the car, the concept’s general proportions are eerily similar to those of the bZ4X. The car has sharp angles and thin light bars on the front and back. The front end has deep creases that make a face. The back of the roof has a steep rise that reminds me of the bZ4X’s two-piece rear spoiler.

The FT-3e from the inside

The FT-3e’s interior is clean and straightforward, with two screens that look like iPhones on either side of the steering wheel to go with the digital gauges and tablet in the middle. Also, two panels on the outside corners of the dashboard look like camera screens for the sideview mirrors. Almost all physical buttons were skipped. A light and airy mood is created by mixing exciting materials and textures.

Since so little is known about the FT-3e, it’s hard to say what it will mean for future Toyota cars. But it’s a sneak peek at Toyota’s next crop of electric vehicles, which will come out in 2026 and use the new solid-state batteries. For example, artwork on the outside and screen patterns on the inside might end up in a real car.
