• Mercedes-AMG has chosen to sell the four-cylinder version of the SL43 in the United States. The SL43 came out last year.
  • The SL43 uses the same cutting-edge design as the AMG C43 car, which has an electric motor built into the turbocharger to eliminate lag.
  • This summer, you can buy the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL43 for $111,050.

The Mercedes-AMG SL43 was first shown in Europe last year. It had a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with Formula 1 technology, making 375 horsepower. Mercedes has said that the SL43 will be a 2023 model in the United States, and sales are set to start this summer. The German car company was curious if it would sell the SL43 in the United States.

The SL43 is the base model of the SL line. It has six cylinders instead of the eight SL55 and SL63 have. Even though the SL43 doesn’t have as much power as the V-8 cars, the M139 inline-four engine in the CLA45 and GLA45 AMG has 375 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque.

The SL43 makes this power in a new way. The turbocharger on the 2.0-liter engine has an electric motor in addition to the standard pipes for the waste gas. The motor, a 1.6-inch-wide device attached to the shaft between the turbine and compressor wheel, lets the compressor wheel spin before the exhaust gases. The e-motor can also boost pressure when the car is slowing down or coasting. This ensures that the turbo is always ready to go when the driver presses the gas pedal again, reducing turbo lag. The turbocharged 1.6-liter V-6 hybrid race cars used by the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team are used in the C43 AMG sedan, which came out last spring. Also, it has 27 more horsepower.

In short bursts, the 48-volt belt-driven starter-generator that powers the turbocharger’s e-motor could make 13 more horsepower. Mercedes says that this rush of power happens at lower revs and has no effect on the car’s 375-hp peak performance. With 48-volt technology, the start-stop mechanism runs more efficiently and can recycle energy when the vehicle slows down.

The longitudinally mounted engine is linked to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Instead of a torque converter, the standard wet clutch pack from AMG is used. Mercedes says the rear-wheel-drive SL43 can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and as fast as 170 mph before the speed limiter cuts it off.

The only noticeable changes to the SL43’s looks are more superficial front and back bumpers and round tailpipes instead of the eight-cylinder SLs’ squared-off outlets. You can buy the SL43 with 20- or 21-inch wheels instead of the standard 19-inch wheels. The luxury interior of the base model has stayed the same. It still comes with heated and cooled Nappa leather seats that can be adjusted electronically. The base price of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL43 is $111,050, which is about $30,000 less than the base price of the V-8 SL55.
