• Volvo’s EX60, a cutting-edge electric SUV, will go on sale here in 2026.
  • This new car will use the SPA3, Volvo’s most advanced modular production design to date, for the first time.
  • By the end of the decade, Volvo intends to introduce five new electric vehicles, including the EX60 and the upcoming ES90 electric sedan.

Volvo wants to make the EX60 an electric small SUV. It will be sold alongside the gasoline-powered XC60. The news was announced on September 5 at a Volvo event in Gothenburg, Sweden. The car company had announced the updated XC90 SUV the day before and changed its mind about its plans to have an all-electric lineup by 2030.

The Volvo EX60 will be the next wave of crossovers built by Y-Rivaling

The EX60, Volvo’s next car, will be the first to be built on the company’s next-generation SPA3 platform. The ES90, which will come out in March 2025, and the new EX90 SUV, on the other hand, will use the company’s current SPA2 production design. Volvo’s SPA3 design is the most complicated one the company has ever used. It should help the company make cars for less money.

Executives at Volvo have said that structural battery packs, which are lighter and cheaper, will be a key part of the new design. With better battery packs, the car will be able to store more energy in the same amount of space. The cells will also be smaller and more energy-dense. The company wants its next version of electric motors to be 93% efficient, which is up from 85% in its first EVs and 91% now.

The new platform can be used to build any future Volvo model because it is made up of separate parts. It’s like a Lego set for cars. The company calls it a “Superset Tech Stack” because it includes industrial parts, software, and hardware that can be used in any situation. Megacasting and modularity will both be used in the new platform to reduce the number of pieces needed for each car.

At the same time, Volvo and other automakers are setting new goals for electric vehicles. CEO Jim Rowan says that the company will keep getting ready by making a range of electric cars and hybrid vehicles for customers and markets that are ready to switch in the coming years. CEO Jim Rowan said, “Our goal is to have 90 to 100 percent electricity by 2030.” Plug-in hybrids and battery-electric types are counted because they have cords, but regular hybrids are not. Rowan added, “But the journey won’t be straight; some markets, like the US, might take longer than others.”
