• Before the CR-V, the Honda Accord wagon was helpful, but it was only offered for two Accord models.
  • The family of the original owner is selling this first-generation Accord car with only 42,000 miles on it.
  • The critical repair of the timing belt was just finished.

In the early 1990s, Honda did well. Ayrton Senna’s tasselled-loafer input made the Acura NSX a revelation in terms of performance. The Civic was cheap but fast, and the Accord was reliable and appealing for transporting a family. When a “crossover” meant Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith doing a rap/rock version of “Walk This Way,” Honda went one step further and turned the Accord into a station wagon, the most helpful car you can get.

This well-kept 1993 Accord LX wagon from Honda’s “Golden Age” is for sale on Bring a Trailer, a Hearst Autos like Car and Driver division. It has only 42,000 miles, and the same family has owned it since it was new. Its simple, clean lines bring to mind an era when less was more when it came to fashion.

The wagon version of the Accord was only offered in the United States during the fourth and fifth generations. Even the ones that went to Japan were made at Honda’s Marysville plant in Ohio. Honda made a version of the Accord wagon that was very fast. It was called the SiR and had a 190-hp four-cylinder engine. The SiR was only sold in Japan.

The 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine in this 1993 model makes 125 horsepower and 137 pound-feet of torque. Due to its four-speed automatic drive, this Honda is more like a shuttle to the farmer’s market than a Brazilian F1 god.

Not that this makes the attraction less critical. The beautifully simple gauges, the well-built cargo space, the well-supported seats, the well-thought-out ergonomics, and the controls all make you miss the days before touchscreens and smartphone connections.

The list of choices is a little short because it’s an LX model, but it has everything you need. The car has a cassette player so you can listen to your old mixtapes. It also has power windows and air conditioning. More importantly, this one has had a lot of work done over the last six years, including fixing the timing belt. It’s been cleaned well and is ready to be used.

This Accord wagon will be on the road for a long time, long after many high-tech modern cars have broken down and gone to the dump. It’s a nice car that still has a lot of miles on it and is easy to take care of. Golden Age Hondas were beautiful because they were the opposite of foreign, adding to their appeal. They were fun to drive and didn’t ask for anything back.
