Toyota has said that the RAV4 Prime and the Prius Prime will now be called the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, respectively. The only thing that’s different for 2025 is the badges. The plug-in RAV4 no longer has blue highlights around its Toyota logos instead, it has a PHEV sign on the back. Both cars still use hybrid powertrains, which can both travel more than 40 miles on electricity alone. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid from Toyota was one of the first cars on the market to have a plug-in hybrid engine. It came out in 2012. Toyota rebranded the Prius PHEV model “Prime” for its second generation in 2017, and for the 2021 model year, the company produced a Prime edition of its popular RAV4 crossover. For the 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota has said that the Prime name will be taken out and replaced with the old naming scheme. Toyota says that the change from Prime to Plug-in Hybrid will help buyers understand the different powertrain choices for the RAV4 and Prius. For the new model year, the blue “halo” pattern that is placed inside the Toyota logo on the front and back of the RAV4 will be removed. This design was used to help show that plug-in cars were better for the Earth. A “PHEV” badge will also be on the back of the plug-in RAV4 and Prius. The only change for the 2025 models of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is a new name. There are still two trim options for the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid SE or XSE. The engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that is connected to two electric motors and makes 302 horsepower. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has an 18.5 kWh battery that lets it go 42 miles on power alone. For the 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, the SE starts at $45,260, and the XSE starts at $49,130. Toyota says that dealerships will have “limited quantities” of the PHEV model by the end of 2024. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid comes in three trims SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. They all have the same 13.6-kWh battery, which lets the SE trim go up to 44 miles on electric power alone. The plug-in hybrid electric Prius has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors that together make 220 horsepower. Toyota has yet to announce a price or timeline for the availability of the 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid.
