• Toyota’s regular range included the Sequoia for families, the 4Runner in the middle, and the Land Cruiser at the top, which sold poorly.
  • Toyota-made Lexus SUVs with broad grilles were never built for off-roading.
  • To escape its specialty, Toyota revamped the Land Cruiser.

Toyota’s US off-road SUVs had an order. The family room Sequoia covered the 4Runner and Land Cruiser. The Lexus Land Cruiser and 4Runner were better and cost more, but their front ends hung lower, and their grilles were wider, reducing ground clearance. Lexus cars have fantastic running gear (and greater power in the GX), but their bodies have always been more susceptible to damage. They appear fragile for off-road use.

Off-roaders couldn’t reach the top Land Cruiser. Most of them stayed in the mall. After 100,000 kilometers, admirers bought them. Based on history and how models only known outside the organization performed, its reputation grew from theoretical to practical. Since the 100-series, we’ve owned only pricey three-row Land Cruisers with independent front suspension, thirsty V-8 engines, and automated gearboxes. Due to this, US Land Cruiser sales could have been better, averaging 3200 units per year over the past decade.

Despite this, the smaller, cheaper 4Runner has sold an average of 130,000 vehicles yearly since 2016. The fifth-generation automobile, released in 2009 for 2010, is still being built.

What went wrong? At the same time, as many body-on-frame SUVs became crossovers, overland camping became popular. Toyota even considered discontinuing the FJ Cruiser. People searched for the final frame-based off-road SUVs and modified them for remote camping. New 4Runners were a decent option as there were few vintage Land Cruisers.

TNGA-F begins.

The terminology could be changed with the adaptable TNGA-F truck design and hybrid-compatible downsizing turbo engines. The Tundra transitioned to leaf springs, and the Sequoia to TONGA’s solid axle. Whether you agree or not, the second became a three-row SUV faster. This makes a US Land Cruiser impossible to justify. Toyota used the TNGA platform to make our Land Cruiser a cheaper two-row off-roader. Lexus will unveil the LX600 in 2022, based on the 300 series.

Foreign countries have long offered Land Cruiser Prado, a cheaper, smaller variant with independent front suspension and lesser engines. The massive Cruiser with the solid axle front suspension was easy to market, but this area no longer sells it. Moving the 2024 Land Cruiser nearer the Prado would not surprise the system in other countries. Since our “big” Land Cruiser didn’t sell well, this makes sense to minimise costs and make it cheaper.

What Happened

Since the Sequoia will have three rows, the Land Cruiser should become a five-seater off-roader like the Prado. Especially if you appreciate off-roading and seeing the real world. There’s parking. The 250-series Prado SUV shares the chassis, suspension, and four-wheel drive system with the 300-series LX600, thanks to the TNGA platform. Both automobiles had 112.2-inch wheelbases and widths. Toyota had to “kill off” the Land Cruiser to convert to the 250-series Prado because of its distinct production schedule.

The Land Cruiser and the new GX550, which has always been based on the Prado, will be in the same class with Lexus tweaks. Longer, higher, and more luxurious, the GX will have a poor approach angle and ground clearance. Its 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 is more powerful but uses more gas. It will likely cost much more. The Land Cruiser has a cheaper front stabiliser bar disconnect instead of the e-KDSS system, while the new GX550 doesn’t. Toyota wants to simplify the Land Cruiser to lower its price.

Last down

This reminds me of the 4Runner issue. TNGA-F engines still need to be installed. Even though they’re closer now, the smaller Land Cruiser is still better and more prominent. Will it have a Land Cruiser-like shorter wheelbase and broader body? Toyota says the new 4Runner won’t be discontinued.

The Tacoma’s part-time four-wheel drive and mid-level engine options should allow the new 4Runner to compete at a lower price. Only TRD Off-Road and Pro models will retain the rear differential lock, MTS, and Crawl Control. Because it distinguishes the 4Runner from the off-road-focused Land Cruiser, the high-performance TRD Pro is expected to stay.

Was it well-planned? You may place a Land Cruiser in your garage. The previous model’s sales increase needed to be faster, and its vast size and the high price never fit the Land Cruiser’s moniker. Toyota had to kill the Land Cruiser to rescue it.
