Age is very important. It plays a role in the sales of fast cars. Because for the first time, the Nissan Z sold more cars than the Toyota Supra in 2024. Even though you might never see them on the road, they are being bought.

Three thousand sixteen Zs were sold by Nissan last year, while only two thousand fifteen Supras were. When the Nissan Z came out in 2021, the Supra was still in a good mood after coming back after 17 years and selling a record-breaking 6,830 cars. Since then, the two cars have gone in different directions. On the other hand, the Nissan Z made a huge splash when it first came out, but it didn’t last long—it only sold 36 units because of problems in the world supply chain caused by the pandemic.

The next year, Supra sales dropped 27% to 4,952, and the next year, they dropped another almost 50% to 2,023 units. In addition, Toyota said it would keep the six-speed manual for a later model. From then on, 2024 was the same as 2023. The Z numbers also went down during that time: 263 in 2022, 1,771 in 2023, and 3,164 the year before.

Okay, there are more sports coupes available. I’m thinking of the little yet powerful Mazda MX-5, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GR86. They are small but strong. The Ford Mustang EcoBoost makes the list if you’re feeling really kind. Compared to the rest of the group, selling 11,426 GR86s and 8,103 MX-5s isn’t even close to Zupra’s numbers. All of this isn’t even close to Ford’s strong Mustang, which sold 44,003 cars in a tough year.

However, none of them can beat Supra and Z’s great performance right out of the box in their base models, which are sometimes the only ones available. Many comparisons have been made between them, including our own head-to-head test, which leads to a part of two. So, it’s just as fair to compare their sales straight.

The Nissan Z will catch up in sales to the Supra. The base GR Supra 2.0 has been replaced by the GR Supra 3.0, which is Toyota’s newest entry-level car. The starting price for the 2025 Supra is then $57,385. The base Z Sport model has 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, even though it says it has 386 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. Nissan hasn’t yet said how much the 2025 model will cost, but the 2024 model starts at $44,110. Nissan is not likely to raise prices by $10,000 per year, even though it is having problems right now.

The BMW Z4, the twin of the Supra, is expected to be retired in 2026, leaving Toyota with just the keys. Toyota says the “Supra brand” will live on whether BMW is there or not. We’ll see where this story goes and when (if?) the Supra can compete with the now-dominant Z again, but “brand” sounds like a more interesting word than “model.”
