Surprisingly, neither BMW nor Toyota is recalling cars because their turn signals do not work. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Subaru say that 8,915 2022 Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 cars may not or only work sometimes.

Subaru says that when the affected headlights are exposed to bright sunlight (or other light sources), electromagnetic force (EMF) can be made. This can cause the circuit voltage to drop. If the voltage drops below a certain point, the car will know something is wrong and turn off the turn lights until the voltage returns to a safe level. Headlights and stoplights do not work any differently because of this.

When this happens, if a driver uses their turn signals, the dashboard lights will flash quickly, just like a light is going out.

When Subaru found out about the problem in 2021, it worked with the company that made its taillights to look into it. In April 2022, Subaru started making BRZs with new headlights that had no problems. But in 2023, the NHTSA and Transport Canada told Subaru about customers who had issues with their taillights. So, any cars made in 2022 that might have broken taillights will be subject to a voluntary recall.

Because their headlights are the same, more Toyota GR86s (5,701) are affected than Subaru BRZs (3,214). Most likely, this is because the GR86 sells better.

The fix is easy: Dealers will replace both taillight assemblies with newer ones that have turn signal capacitors with higher values. Within the next month or so, owners with broken headlights should get a notice so they can set up the recall fix.

In the meantime, if you change the Toyota/Subaru logo to a BMW image, everyone behind you will understand if your GR86/BRZ turn signals stop working.
