Volkswagen is calling back 261,257 VW and Audi cars to fix a suction pump that isn’t working right. This pump could be the cause of gas tank leaks. The recall affects front-wheel drive cars that have a certain type of Gentherm suction jet pump as part of the fuel tank assembly, according to the automaker’s NHTSA filings.

VW dealer directions in the recall materials say that the pump’s job is to remove fuel from the emissions system. They also say that there is a chance that the seal will fail, which could lead to fuel building up and finally leaking through the charcoal filter. The guidelines say that customers with a broken pump may have problems with refueling like fuel spilling back or a nozzle that stops too soon. Passengers may also smell fuel inside the car.

The recalled cars are:

  • The Audi A3 sedan (47,391) and cabriolet (3875)
  • The Golf GTI (114,485)
  • The Golf (58,544)
  • The Golf SportWagen (26,037)
  • The Jetta GLI (10,000)Both models were made between 2015 and 2020.

According to statistics from the NHTSA, Volkswagen says that the problem has not caused any fires. People who own cars will get recall letters on April 12. People who own cars should check the NHTSA’s page on recalls to see if their car is one of the types that is being recalled.
