• Yesterday, Volkswagen teased a new affordable EV for the European market, which is expected to be named the ID.1.
  • In March, an idea for the ID.1 will be shown, and production will start in 2027.
  • Starting at an estimated $21,000, the ID.1 will sit below the $26,000 ID.2 in Volkswagen’s electric lineup.

Volkswagen recently said that the ID.7 electric car will not be sold in the US. The car was supposed to come out in the US last summer but was pushed back. VW’s only electric options in the US right now are the ID.4 and ID. Buzz because the company doesn’t have any clear plans for the future. But in Europe, work is still going on a number of new EVs. Volkswagen recently gave a hint at one of the more interesting models: a cheap electric hatchback that will likely cost around $20,700.

Volkswagen Teases The $21,000 ID.1 Electric Hatchback, Set To Launch In 2027

During a presentation yesterday in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen showed off a sneak peek of their new entry-level EV. The hatchback, which is likely to be called the ID.1, has headlights set up in a narrow, horizontal band across the grille. This makes it look friendly. There is also what looks like a gloss-black panel and a lit VW logo in the design. An Instagram video shows one of the headlights “winking.” They have a rectangular unit between two LED frames. There are thin, vertical LED running lights on the outside edges of the bumper.

Volkswagen aims to show off a concept version of the basic electric vehicle (EV) in early March of this year. The production-ready version will come out in 2027. Volkswagen says that the ID.1 will cost about $21,000, but that number could change by the time production starts in 2027. Unfortunately, American customers will still not be able to get the ID.1.

To build on the ID.2all idea that was introduced in 2023, the ID.1 will sit below the ID.2, which is set to hit stores in Europe in 2026. A version of the MEB platform should be able to work with both types. Volkswagen says that the ID.2 will start at a price of about $26,000. Volkswagen has also shown the ID.GTI concept, which looks like the ID.2all on the outside and is the German company’s future sporty nameplate. Just like the ID.1, the ID.2 probably won’t be sold in the US.

Volkswagen is reportedly planning to make an all-electric version of the long-running Golf for the next generation. However, it’s not clear if this will also replace the ID.3, a golf-sized EV that has been a popular choice in Europe since it came out in 2019. Volkswagen’s new SSP platform will power the electric Golf. VW also says that an electric version of the T-Roc, a famous small SUV in Europe, will be built on top of this platform. Volkswagen is moving production of the gasoline-powered Golf to Mexico so that its Wolfsburg plant has room for these cars.

Volkswagen’s ID line of electric cars has been well received in Europe and other parts of the world, even though the company has been slow to deliver EVs in the US. Volkswagen has sold more than 1.35 million ID-branded cars since the ID.3 came out, with 500,000 of those being ID.3s. Last year, Volkswagen sold 383,100 EVs around the world. Volkswagen wants to release nine new cars by 2027. The ID.1 and ID.2 are two of them.
