By using Tesla’s proprietary charging link, Polestar has joined Volvo in getting access to Tesla’s massive network of fast-charging Superchargers. Starting in 2025, Polestar and Volvo EVs will have NACS ports; the following year, an adapter will be available for older models. Along with Ford, GM, and Rivian, Polestar and Volvo are the most recent automakers to say they want to use the NACS port. They are also the first international automakers to say this. As more and more car companies decide to use Tesla’s proprietary charging port, the North American Charging Standard (or NACS for short), a fundamental shift is happening in how electric cars are charged. As of today, Polestar and Volvo are the newest automakers to sign deals with Tesla to use the American company’s charge infrastructure. Things will be different in 2025 Polestar and Volvo say that by 2025, all of their electric cars will have a NACS port. Customers can charge their vehicles at Tesla’s massive network of Superchargers in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Volvo CEO Jim Rowan said in a news release that convenient access to charging infrastructure is a major reason why more people aren’t transitioning to electric driving, a key step toward greener transportation. Getting More Adapters What does this mean for people who own Volvo and Polestar cars made before the NACS was implemented? Manufacturers say that their current line of EVs with CCS-type charge ports will be able to connect to Tesla’s chargers with the help of an adapter. Volvo has the XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge, the newly released EX30, and the new EX90, which has three rows of seats. Polestar only has the high-riding two hatchback right now, but the Polestar 3 SUV will be available in early 2019. The Polestar 4 and Polestar 5 cars will come next and might go into production as 2025 models. Nobody knows if the last two EVs will come from the NACS port. Based on when it will happen, it will likely be in the 2026 Polestar 6 roadster when it goes into production. According to Polestar and Volvo, the CCS-to-NACS adaptor will be ready in the middle of next year. No one knows how much either brand of converter will cost if anything. Also, owners who want to charge their battery with a CCS charger can get a NACS-to-CCS converter for their new 2025 car from both automakers. Even though several American car companies have already agreed to use Tesla’s charging port, Polestar, and Volvo are the first foreign companies to do so. Ford started the process, then GM did, and now Rivian has chosen to work with Tesla. It is said that Stellantis and Hyundai will be the following companies to use NACS.
