• Volkswagen showed off its first electric station wagon, the ID.7 Tourer, to people in Europe yesterday.
  • The ID.7 Tourer has more room for cargo and a more advanced head-up display than the sedan.
  • The station wagon has the same engine as the car, but we don’t think it will be coming to the US any time soon.

Volkswagen plans to release the ID.7, a midsize electric car, in the US in the second half of this year. It will partly replace the long-running Passat. On the other hand, the Passat only exists as a station wagon across the Atlantic. The ID.7 Tourer, an electric car that can be used instead of the Passat Variant, has now been released. We’re sorry to say that it looks like this electric car can only be used in Europe.

In 2025, the XC40 and C40 electric cars will be called Volvo EX40 and EC40, respectively

Volkswagen’s 2019 I.D. Space Vizzion concept car looks a lot like the ID.7 Tourer. This concept car gave us our first looks at an electric wagon at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It has a similar solemn and muted look to the ID.7 sedan, but the roofline is longer and has a thin silver trim piece that gets wider as it goes into the D-pillar to draw attention to it. VW says that the sedan can carry up to 19 cubic feet of stuff when the back seats are folded down and 61 cubic feet of stuff when they are raised.

The Tourer and the car are the same on the inside. This is the same as a base 77.0-kWh battery that can go about 300 miles. Volkswagen also says that an optional 86.0-kWh battery can go 426 miles on the WLTP test run in Europe. VW says the bigger battery can be charged at up to 200 kW, which means it can go from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes. The ID.7 has the same 282-hp single-motor rear-wheel drivetrain. In the future, an all-wheel-drive version may be made.

The ID.7 Tourer’s interior is the same as the sedan’s. There are a few physical buttons and a big 15.0-inch touchscreen for entertainment that sticks out from the dashboard. The Tourer comes with a better-augmented reality head-up display that lets you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to find your way.

From the end of this year on, the ID.7 Tourer will be sold in Europe. Along with the ID.7 car and ID.4 crossover, the wagon is made in Germany. Volkswagen said at first that the Space Vizzion idea would be made in the US by 2022, but we think the ID.7 Tourer will only make it here after today. If this does happen, it will be much later in 2024, after ID.7 cars start going on sale.
