• The new Toyota Land Cruiser is being compared to the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, which was just released.
  • The Land Cruiser is more than five inches taller than Toyota’s other new off-road-focused midsize SUV, but their bodies are the same size, and they have the same wheelbase.
  • The 4Runner has both the 326-hp hybrid turbo-four engine that all Land Cruisers have and, on cheaper model levels, a standard 278-hp engine that is not a hybrid.

It’s true that the new Toyota Land Cruiser is smaller and costs less, but the redesigned 2025 Toyota 4Runner should still be cheaper because it has a few changes. Let’s look at what makes Toyota’s two new off-road-ready midsize SUVs different.

What the 2024 and 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser and 4Runner are like next to each other

How cars move

The base 4Runner engine, a 2.4-liter turbo-4 with 278 horsepower, doesn’t have hybrid technology. On the other hand, the Land Cruiser comes with a more powerful electrically assisted engine that makes 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. With the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter trims, as well as most other 4Runners, the i-Force Max hybrid system is standard. Toyota hasn’t said how much fuel the 4Runner will use yet, but the hybrid models will get about 23 mpg combined, which is about the same as the Cruiser.

There is only one gearbox choice for both Toyota SUVs, and that is an eight-speed automatic. Almost all of them have part-time four-wheel drive, but only the 4Runner has rear-wheel drive. All the other Land Cruisers have full-time systems. Each SUV can carry up to 6,000 pounds. However, the Cruiser doesn’t have any of the advanced damper choices that are only available on the 4Runner.

Sizes and shapes

The new 4Runner is about the same size as the Land Cruiser. Its wheelbase is 112.2 inches, and its total width is about the same as the width of the suspension tracks. The biggest difference is in height, with the Land Cruiser’s top being about 5.3 inches higher.

The 4Runner has more off-road clearance than the Toyota 4Runner. It can come up to 32 degrees and leave 24 degrees. With an approach angle of up to 31 degrees and an exit angle of up to 22 degrees, the Land Cruiser is far behind. On top of that, the 4Runner has 9.2 inches of ground clearance, while the Cruiser only has 8.7 inches.

Inside and outside the cargo

We think that the TLC gives you a better view over the hood and to the sides from the seats than the new Tacoma or any similar vehicle, like the new 4Runner. We drove the Lexus GX550 and sat in a Land Cruiser when it first came out.

A 4Runner that isn’t hybrid and doesn’t need a battery under the floor might claim that cruisers have more cargo room, which is less true. However, each Land Cruiser can fit five people thanks to the hybrid battery we talked about earlier. There are, however, some 4Runners with three rows of seats.
